Description
Beat a personal time/detail goal with this one!Β ΒAnd so I present the ladies of the Obsidian, Captain Scarlet Waters and Heiti.
The goal here was to make Scarlet look distracted and in deep thought with somewhat of a lonely feeling. I wanted to draw them together because these two are the only females on the ship and I think Scarlet would secretly love the cat's company for this reason. She'd never admit it, but she does get rather lonely and craves the occasional interaction with someone more feminine.
I think this will forever be one of my favorites. I don't often draw cats, but I think she turned out alright. I'm proud of a lot of the details, especially the fire and smoke. I usually skimp out of Scarlet's outfits because I find drawing intricate clothing daunting and intimidating, but I sucked it up and tried to make something actually piratey! I also included things like jade, turquoise, and carved ivory in her hair to demonstrate her global sense of fashion (because there would have been a lot of plundering along trading routes going on.) I wanted to portray Scarlet as something between feminine and careless, which is why her hair is messy with elegant accessories, and her outfit is mix-and-matched, and she's got a cigar and dirty nails. I don't know, I just feel like I finally managed to portray the Scarlet in my head instead of half-assing her appearance like usual.

I like how you've done the colors, with the candle and the nighttime Β

I really love this piece, I know I already said it but I thought I should leave a comment!
The companionship between the characters in here is conveyed in a really nice way! I love the motion of the cat's body, the fluidity of the arch of it's back and the expression on her face <3
Scarlet looks really nice, such a sweet expression, it tells you everything you need to know - that kind of relenting look that I can imagine you wouldn't see from her too often!
The details look wondering, like you say the fire and smoke are really effective, and I love that you have actually created a female pirate who /looks/ like a pirate - you're not afraid to add the features like her nails and the messy hair. It really makes for a more convincing, loveable and realistic character.Β
All in all, top notch work! I love it!
And bonus points for the cat because I love cats <3

Oh gosh, thank you so much for the thoughtful comment!Β Β
Indeed, Scarlet does not look so calm and generally approachable 99.9% of the time xD
Yessss eee thank you- one of my biggest pet peeves are characters that don't seem to "fit" in their story, if that makes sense.
I mean she's not only a pirate, but a captain. I don't think she'd be wearing dresses and garters ya dig
Thanks again! <3
Heiti loves you tooΒ Β

No problem! There was a lot to talk about on this! <3
I had a feeling! She looks quite fierce from what I saw of your other drawings! :'D
Yes, I know exactly what you mean! When you have female characters who are so perfectly coiffed in situations they totally wouldn't, just like your character here! I love the feminine touches like the pieces of jewels and whatnot, but yeah, she really fits the role of a pirate captain, go her! :'D
And yay! That emoticon is amazing omg

Ha heh ehhh yeah she's not the sweetest peach on the tree for sure
Yessss
I absolutely adore flawed characters
I'm like, crooked, silver teeth? frizzy hair? many scars? broken features? mental disabilities? hecks yeah man count me in I'd ride that train all day
At first I had a real issue with having a female captain character in the first place (it just... happened)
So I tried my best to somewhat real-ify her and her history aww yee

And that just makes her even better ;D
Yes! I totally understand with that, I have some really messed up characters, I love scars and scruffy characters they're just so fun to work with. There's no fun in making everyone perfect! :'D
I love that you didn't actually set out to have a female captain, it shows you just let the character happen and you've really gotten attached to her, it's great ;3; You're doing a great job!

Yess I think they look better with flaws
AND you get stories out of them
Like the scar on Scarlet's lips and her gold tooth were caused by the antagonist of the first book, as well as scars on her thigh.
But she also has a burn scar on her left arm from being branded by another character (after she blinded one of her eyes. I don't feel bad for maiming my characters, they usually deserve it)
And then the blondie Vin's got the facial scar and broken nose from Scarlet, a scar on his arm from picking a fight with his sister's husband, one across his back from his first battle, and one on his chest from Scarlet's potential sister in law. Plus he kind of ends up just as scruffy of a mess as Scarlet eventually so -shrug- frizzy hair = character development
... I'm extremely attached :'D
Thank you! <3

Exactly! It just adds depth to the character when you have little things like that, they're just interesting all round!
Ahah your characters like sound a right bunch!! scrappy as hell ahaha!
I know what you mean though, I love the sound of your characters already ;3;
You're welcome! <3

I love the expressions on their faces, she all bemused and perhaps a bit lost, the cat all smug because she is getting attention. Fantastic!

I can help but admire the atmosphere. The cast light, the warmth, the out of focus background. The details from the map to the dancing candle flame are equally as stunning.

Well I do not claim to know these characters, but the image of a scarlet seductress keeping company with a cat and filling the Captain's questers with voluminous plumes of her cigar smoke is delicious.Β

Quite so, but don't ya know, a whole lot of Lasses seem to be possessed of that quality of intrinsic enthrall even if they are not that at all. Typically this is the juncture where trouble begins when the causal observer assumes it.Β
