I love this. I think itβs great. I was reading the comments and Iβm shocked. Why are these Christians acting hostile? I admire you for speaking your mind and standing up for the obvious minority here.
I donβt think people realize how much atheists are discriminated against and hated.

I feel bad about being late on this but... about the atheist thing I'm guessing it's because sometimes we tend to think of atheists being eager to mock christians right back... which a bunch of the non-christians on here just did >_>
and were the christians ALL acting hostile?
I have to admit I was kinda offended at this before I read a few of the artist's comments... once you understand that he wasn't trying to make a huge in-your-face all christians are idiots statement it's a little easier to appreciate I guess
it's really hard to be a christian and be represented by really angry hostile people so much of the time -____- please don't think we're all examples of supergreat christians or something, nobody's perfect

I just read all the comments on this, and I found it very interesting.
It's pretty damn controversial, and I think you did a really good job of handling it all!
It was good to see people with (mostly) clearly-thought responses istead of bashing the other person for not agreeing with their own beliefs. Mostly.

Very true. But some people just refuse to take their bashing quietly and insist they are right, you are wrong, and we are all going to hell (in their eyes, anyway.)
Still, it's amusing!

Hi skryingbreath! I've just found all your works and I love them... both the design AND the messages.
This work also reflects, essentially, my favorite definition of political power: "the power to make people decide, for themselves, what you want them to decide."
Clearly, judging by the reaction here, religion is also a political force.
And since people here are being wordy, let me add this: while I no longer live there, I'm originally from the very politically-correct city of San Francisco. There, it's true, people are allowed to be whatever they want .. BUT, only *IF* it is something on the list of "approved" PC identities and behaviors. Woe to the person who expresses his opinions freely if it's anything that the PC Terroristas would disapprove. They will then heap tons of indignation upon the offender.
It's such a stupid world.

That's odd, I've always though San Fransisco to be one of the more progressive cities, I guess there's prudes everywhere.
Thank you for such an insightful comment, I'd reply better if this cold weren't blocking my articulation.
π: 0 β©: 1
fotocali In reply to skryingbreath [2008-05-08 23:12:17 +0000 UTC]
oh sure it's progressive, but radically progressive to the point of being (as much as I hate the word): fascistic in its DEMAND that everyone be politically correct. That's San Francisco's big lie: "Be whatever you want here in San Francisco." Not true: "they'll" let you be whatever you want IF "THEY" approv, if what you want to be is PC-approved. If what you want to be is politically INcorrect, forget it. You are not approved.
But, I'm going on like one of those people "with issues..."

While I enjoy the style of your art, I think that you have a limited amount of information going into the concept behind this one. While from a Biblical perspective, we are on the one hand God's servants, on the other hand, we have been made friends of God and set free from evil and even from the things that we have to do in order to be declared good - the Bible puts it this way: "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."
Again - I enjoy the impressive visual style, but as a few people have pointed out (though perhaps in less charitable terms than could be used), you don't quite see the message behind the story and the symbol.
I'm open to dialogue if you're willing.

Thank you for being civil. This is not a piece of biblical interpretation, but rather what the christian church has come to today. People protesting things they don't understand, prosecuting and harming in the name of some kind of god. I have no problem with the bible and people reading it, hell it has some fucking cool stories that I enjoy (Judith and Holofernes, etc). I do have a problem with individuals using the stories of a religion to their own agenda under the guise that it's god's will. I also have a problem with people blindly following commands from the deified pastors and church officials who have been so corrupted and skewed from the original text that they are doing what they think is right, but it's wrong.
I knew submitting this piece full and well what to expect, people would love it and people would hate it. I have nothing wrong with 99.9999% of christians or the idea of christianity but it's that .00001% that just ruins the crowd. It's nice to see that you're being open, meeting this kind of work with a warmongering, bloodhungry additude only reinforces my notion of the Christian religion.

Hmm..thanks for this explaination. Look at the submittion alone I got the impression that you were pushing this label or stereotype to christianity as a whole but I do have to agree with you about blindly following..And sadly, to be honest I'd say its a load less than 99.9999% percent who really know whats up about the religion and God their following...
Yeah..thanks for that
And in regaurds to what extrian dreamer was saying..I don't think you can expect someone to post both sides of the point theyre expressing..it doesn't have to be "fair" its just an opinion..but it may help if the concept may be hard to grasp if you did put some kind of explaination in the comments.
But it's up to you

Thank you for helping me to understand the meaning behind your work with those clarifying remarks. Pieces such as yours that involve deeply ingrained cultural and personal images can evoke strong emotional responses in the viewer, whether favoring or against the work. Connections that run so deeply in us that we respond without thinking and without giving charitable consideration to the possibility of misunderstanding. According the the Bible the cross is described as an "offence" to those who don't believe, though it seems ironic that Christians so readily are the ones to take offence to more 'controversial' portrayals of the cross - even I can have difficulty with that.
As for the detest of corrupted religion that you express above, I think that most Christians, myself included, would agree with you. There have been horrible abuses of power and authority in the name of God in the past, and a few still continue today. The Bible even warns of "wolves among the flock" and those who cause discord and distort things to their own ends.
In a society where Christianity is so deelply intertwined through history, Christianity can easily come to be synonymous with those in power who oppress (power comes with serious temptations). The intertwining with "Christianity" with such civil and political structures tends to result in people using "Christianity" to their advantage - claiming allegiance to it for political or social advantage... and I strongly suspect that many of the abuses carried out aren't by people who are truly Christian, but are using it for their own ends. [By "Christian", I mean someone who is a follower of Jesus Christ, trusting Him for their life and soul, and living to please Him. So it is quite possible as one friend said - being in the garage doesn't make me a car, any more than being in a church makes me a Christian.]
I think that as the church's influence has dwindled, it's left fewer people in the pews who were there for some social advantage. While there have been failings - we too are sinners, only forgiven ones - I don't think that the issue is nearly as common as you may think.
We also have to be careful though in saying which are the ones who are "doing what they think is right, but [is] wrong". A lecture that I attended Thursday brought this point into sharp focus for me. The speaker (Dr. John Stackhouse, Jr.) pointed out that it is possible for more than one view to represent the will of God - take for example a war for some just end - it would be possible for Chrisitans to fight that war, while some could at the same time protest it in the name of Peace. Both fighting for justice and the desire for deep and lasting peace are expressions of God's will.
Finally, in light of the social and moral (?) commentary that your work might be, I do have one suggestion for improvement that might help the message hit home for a few more people like myself. It is this: the squares that make up the cross are all the same colour, suggesting that you see them as being all the same, but your comments indicate otherwise (the "99.9999%" vs the "0.0001 % who.. ruin [it]". If you were to change it so that you had one off-colour square (just a shade darker or lighter) from which the comment box was coming... I think that it might reinforce your message as you described it to me. What do you think? Give it a try and see if it works for you.
(whoa... sorry about the lengthiness of that )
