It didn't take long for 2 to make it back to the house. He went straight down the elevator. The door to Nicole's workspace opened. Alerted by the sound the girl swung around in her chair in front of the large screen and put down the pen she had been gnawing with her teeth. She was visibly relieved to see the cyborg return in one piece.
314 stood to the side and also turned his gaze from the screen towards 2.
>Welcome back>, he greeted in a formal manner.
As 2 took steps away from the door, Nicole picked up on a sway in the way he walked. Subtle, but enough for her keen eye to pick up on. The cyborg started feeling his left side, which confirmed her suspicion. He was hurt. The girl bounced onto her feet, but 2 waved his free hand to signal her to sit back down.
>We can't leave you like that!> she insisted.
"Calm down and let me handle it", the cyborg said and leaned on the side desk for support. "You had something to show me?"
The blue flames withered away and 2 switched to his human body, wincing from the pain. Something definitely broke when that serpent struck him earlier. Nicole and 314 watched in stunned silence as the blond pressed his hand on his side and a soft glow appeared as he began to heal himself. He lifted his look at the others and didn't let their stares bother. He knew what he was doing, even if the others had never seen or even considered it possible before.
"So? Show me?" He gave Nicole a look.
>Right. Yeah.>
She sat back on her chair and turned towards the screen. Nicole's train of thought had gotten sidetracked when she realized she hadn't considered 2's human transformation to have that kind of practical use. Well, any kind of practical use in general. But of course: he could self-heal! She felt like a complete fool, which wasn't a common or pleasant feeling for her.
>This.>
Nicole opened a view on the large screen showing footage from the weather satellite. The heat anomaly the strange serpent had caused had looked like a large red splatter on the map before, but whatever was happening now showed a dark, near black umber streak spreading across the planet's surface.
>One could say it flipped when you gave it the slip>, 314 said.
2 looked at the footage in disbelief. That thing, Verno, was scorching the planet. For an iron-core planet Leicia was massive but at this rate... Heck it was already an ecological disaster.
"So it's trying to smoke me out? Or just having a fit," 2 wondered begrudgingly as he was finishing up his healing session. After quickly feeling his side he lit his fiery aura back on.
"Couldn't even find out what it was here for. Clearly something though. And it was convinced I was a curator. Is that connection something that can give us more information?"
He took a few steps closer to the others. Nicole switched from the satellite view to a different tab with a near endless list of files from her data archive scrolling by. She shrugged and swung her arms in frustration.
>I wish it was. If it knows about the curators it has to be an ancient being - but of course it is. You saw that thing. The name didn't ring any bells either, and that's all of it. I put in a search into the old archives, but those backups are buried deep and there's only so much I can find without manually extracting them. But...> Nicole hesitated for a moment. >Do we even have time for research?>
She switched back to the satellite view. Time was of the essence indeed. Nicole was nervously rotating back and forth on her chair and 2 wasn't sure himself if they had enough time for a background check on this threat. Then again...
"There's not much else we can do right now", he admitted bitterly.
>If only we could ask...>, Nicole muttered half a sentence and lowered her gaze with a shallow sigh.
2 placed his hand on her shoulder. It sure would be easier to just ask Zero. But he wasn't here anymore. Nicole was the next best thing if she could just keep it together. 314 glanced at the girl with a sorrowful expression, but she luckily didn't notice she was getting pitied.
"We're fine", 2 declared. "No matter what that thing is, it can't keep this up forever. Once it stops to rest we can choose our next move. Until then I want you to keep looking into it. See if we can learn anything."
She nodded and took a deep breath to compose herself. 2 removed his hand and turned to 314.
"Brandon is still off-planet, right? Organize a place for him to stay for the time being. Better he doesn't end up in the middle of this."
>On it.>
"Good. Keep me posted."
2 left the others to their tasks and headed to the elevator. Back upstairs he went to the living room and flopped down on the couch. The blue fire dissipated once again and the sudden pain made him take a few sharp breaths.
"Oh stars..."
Gritting his teeth he managed to switch his position a bit so he could continue trying to heal his body once more.

I just knew he wasn't getting out of this one unscathed...

I've had this scene ready to go since September. Suffice to say, if I finally managed to get the cover art done within a week after starting ADHD medication, maybe there's a reason those got prescribed to me. Idk what has been so difficult about this one anyway. The neurodivergent urge to do anything but the thing that would progress things at all.

I have another scene lined up right after this. Maybe I'll post it in a few days, maybe I'll do some little fixes and you'll see it in a week or so.
