Description !BIG FILE!

Finished: 8.6.2013
Tools: Photoshop
My previous wing tutorial:

Yayy, more wings!
At first I was about to just redo my old wing tutorial, add a few things and explain them more thoroughly, but then I said screw that and decided to get to the main point.
I wrote the text in one night when I got really angry about some ugly wings and bad arguments for them. xD I had to clean up the text a lot afterwards though.
I decided to keep the appearance somewhat close to the previous tutorial.

Oh, and by the way: I don't own any of the bird images in this tutorial. I have gathered reference pictures on my drive and because I name them with numbers I don't know where I've got them.
So if somebody owns an image of this tutorial and doesn't want me to use it then please tell me and I'll replace or remove it.
The only photo I own is that where I brutally photoshopped my own arms. x) Oh, and the texture on the bg.

I hope you find this helpful! Questions and comments, good or bad, are welcome!

Ps. And of course there's a typo. xD Obsesive -> Obsessive

I'm glad it helped! I've been meaning to improve this and my other wing tutorial for years but never have the energy. :')

It’s always important to take break, I’m sure whatever you make will look spectacular regardless!

This will prove useful in my next artwork, i want my bird creature to be perfect in a realistic light!

Thanks so much for this! I can't wait to put this into practice!

I've wanted to make a newer wing tutorial ever since this one was finished but it's so much work I haven't gotten around to it. I'm glad even this older one has given you some material to work with.

People argued with you that feathers overlap? I'm reading this right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skudde In reply to Nekter [2015-09-22 09:33:26 +0000 UTC]

Not exactly. No one has tried to claim feathers wouldn't overlap like that in real life, but some artists are very keen on claiming that they don't need to overlap the right way in their art and that the art could look good even so. I greatly disagree with that. : P Even the most simplistic hands and feet look silly if the thumb is on the wrong side or ankle twists backwards, and feathers are the same thing when it comes to wings. There is the right way and many wrong ways to overlap the feathers.

I love this, thank you for posting (:
I agree that it is annoying to find people that are too lazy to study wings, and then use those Boring excuses -.-
I have been studying wings ever since I started drawing birds, and I find that they are so fun to draw. Trying to find out what feathers go where is like a puzzle, and is very rewarding, especially when I get comments like "I love the way you do wings" Etc.

Skudde In reply to Lightfoot-Hearts [2014-08-19 17:48:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, especially with artwork that's otherwise great, skillfully made in every other aspect but the wings have reversed feathers or are otherwise like straight from an anime.
And thanks for the comment~ Keep on drawing those wings!

Lightfoot-Hearts In reply to Skudde [2014-08-19 18:56:39 +0000 UTC]

Yes, that is extremely annoying -.-
Or when very skillful artists draw mop wings.
Annoying to no end.

Silenced-Dreams [2013-06-20 21:03:48 +0000 UTC]

Sweet tutorial, I was wondering if you have links to higher res images of the refs you used?  I don't think I have all of them ;o;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skudde In reply to Silenced-Dreams [2013-06-21 07:21:35 +0000 UTC]

Unfortunately no, since I don't know where I got them. (and since I can't credit the artists I don't want to upload their photography art anywhere else) You just have to manage with the smaller versions.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Silenced-Dreams In reply to Skudde [2013-06-21 08:44:08 +0000 UTC]

Oh I didn't mean upload the photos; just links to their galleries if they have a flickr or something.

Thnakyou anyway!  I shall have to do some research and find more XD

Skudde In reply to Silenced-Dreams [2013-06-21 10:34:05 +0000 UTC]

But as I said in the description: I don't know where I got the photos because they have just been lying on my drive as my personal reference material. :')

Do that. There's tons of good refs out there!

windfalcon [2013-06-20 19:00:59 +0000 UTC]

Beautiful! Thank you thank you I have been plagued for years with seeing beautiful art marred by bad wings. Or feathers in the wrong order or worse - no order at all. Just silly ribbons or leaves stuck wherever. The more we can get this message out, the better! And you explained it in a very amusing way :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skudde In reply to windfalcon [2013-06-21 07:25:20 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! ^^ And it's true. Bad wings are like pollution since they increase because people just don't care. I don't always mind if people draw weird ribbon wings for their manga-angels-OCs, but with animals there should be some sense with their wings. :'D
And thanks again, I tried to make the tuto less boring.

Thank you for posting this! It's frequently the mistake I always correct people on, myself.

I'm only going to point out another pet-peeve of my own that was mentioned, to poke at you. They're Canada Geese. It drives me nuts when they're called Canadian Geese.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skudde In reply to FireMaster13 [2013-06-20 18:25:22 +0000 UTC]

No problem. I'm the same. : D

Really? Wow, you're right. I must admit I never really checked that. :'D *shame on me* "Canada Geese" even sounds weird to me. Well, you always learn something new.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FireMaster13 In reply to Skudde [2013-06-20 18:29:00 +0000 UTC]

It really is people are too lazy to check accuracy sometimes. I used to be terrible at winged critters and decided, 'No, I need to improve and make this look believable'. *Shrugs* If you don't try you won't get better. It's nice to see this posted, though.

It's become so common that it's taken as the 'norm'. It's what I got my degree in so simple things with bird nomenclature or mammals rub me wrong sometimes.

Celia94 [2013-06-20 11:44:52 +0000 UTC]

I don't understand how people can get confused at that, it's just pure LOGIC. You don't have to think much to know it... oh, maybe that's the problem, thinking...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skudde In reply to Celia94 [2013-06-20 12:50:03 +0000 UTC]

There are many things that are simple and logic but which people don't know because they never care enough to think. : P

Kello on näköjään kohta kaksi... Vanhusta alkaa väsyttää xD )

Haha, liketys oliskin jo jännä asia täälä devassa, vaan mieti jos täällä vois antaa tähtiä 1/5 niin kuin tubessa aikoinaan.

Niin no, toi vois toimia.
