Hey man thats some awesome looking stuff
(Got to say this seems more spot on than the next version in my opinion)
I came across your work while hunting for illustrations of the 'old ones' from Lovecraft's 'Mountains of Madness'
As I'm doing a BA in 'CG Arts and Animation' and I'm just starting my minor project, which is to design and create the 'Old ones' ruined city in Maya
I threw some of your work up on my blog, hope you dont mind and I'll give you a link if you fancy a browse
Keep up the awesome work

Its not such an incredible blog really, but hopefully that will be changing soon
I've done a fair amount of digging on the subject etc and I'm going to start attacking concept stuff tomorrow in theory.
But yeah man feel, free have a browse:

I like this and the final equally. You really did a good job on this.

Thanks, I still like this one too a little better, More alien qualities.

BTW-I LOVE the wodowmanker. Very creepy! So inhumanly human!

I think the wings are a little off from the descriptions. They are suppose to be fan like but right now they appear to me as serrated bone.

I agree, the word "fan" can also refer to a sea animal found on coral reefs.

I love it overall, you've really done a great job so far. From what I've read, I pictured the wings as more delicate-looking, or "membranous". That's really open to interpretation, though, as (from what I've gathered) the wings were more to aid them in transdimensional flight through space, so air performance wasn't really an issue I guess.
The Things were also able to fold their wings into slots in their body for easy storage.
Anyway, just my two cents, keep it up!

I may be on to something new with that in mind.

Thanks for your time and the input. I will be sure to get the folding thing worked in, once I can nail down the look! thanks again!

My pleasure! Your HPL work makes me drool.
Just to confuse the issue even more: the wings were described as "fan-like", which many people envisioned thusly: [link]
I don't know what I think about fan-wings. They definitely make the Thing look very alien, but they don't look like they'd be very realistic aids for flight.

fan like a Japanese hand fan or fan like the sea animals that Lovecraft dwells upon.

That's a good point. I wonder if he envisioned a hand fan-like wing with accordion-style folds that folded itself away inside its body, or more of a sea fan (gorgonian) type structure. My bet is on the first type.

Thanks! made my day. I'm not getting to much feedback on this because I think no one has ever heard of it on zcentral.

Yeah I noticed you on zcentral too- not a big lovecraft community on there. One thing I wish I could do that you do is stay on a model as long as you do, I always get bored of looking at the same ol' pixols and switch to something new

Wow! Fantastic! I was kind of visualising bat-wings, but these are much better; really alien-looking!

that was my feeling too. I'm a little indecisive on this guy about the wings.

Maybe make them a tad bigger is all I'd say.

really. interesting. did you take the 7 foot wing statement as vertical or horizontal.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
evilscary In reply to skullbeast [2008-12-21 19:08:02 +0000 UTC]
I'd say horizontal. They might be scale-perfect right now, but they just look a bit... small. But then this is compared to the mental picture I had when reading Mountains of Madness.
The model is still excellent!

He is really taking on the concepts Lovecraft had! Gotta love insanity!
Oh, did you happen to download the other two files yet? FileFront said there weren't any downloads as of yesterday.

Sure thing! Anything for a fellow Lovecraft fan.
Oh, be warned, my textures are woefully small compared to what you are used to handling. Any bigger and I turn a game into a slide show lol.

Keep up the good work!
