Long ago, the overseers of the Worldlines and parents of the Worldlines' guardians, the Mist Larvae, created an artifact, one that they would soon come to regret bringing to existence. A mad god in the Exodrion Worldline, named Terios, created a machine that, after a certain amount of time, destroys and remakes universes, or "resets" them, ushering in the age of the cycles. The overseers were able to isolate the cycles to just the Exodrion Worldline, but this would have the side effect of driving one, and later all, of the Guardian Beasts mad and leading them to kill each other. The cycles also set two of the weavers of destiny, Seasha and Ceidva, on the path of villainy, they grew bored of the cycles and tried to work outside of them, breaking a hole in reality and witnessing a being on the other side of the Nexus, Felltrex, whom they swore allegiance to and would later begin an eons-long campaign of destruction. While Kronos and a powerful Witch were eventually able to end the cycles, during the time of the cycles, Guide and the Astronomer (two of the Overseers) were brainstorming ways to stop Terios' reign. One of these ideas was the Nexal Cassette, a self-updating cassette tape containing everything that has happened in all of the Nexus' Worldlines. In it's complete form, it can be used to rewrite reality. However, it's development only finished shortly after the end of the cycles. Guide and the Astronomer, who were raising the second (and current) generation of Mist Larvae, were unsure of what to do with it. But they were sure that it shouldn't be left exposed. One of the new Overseers and a survivor of the cycles, Lurker, volunteered to have the Nexal Cassette hidden within him, so it was implanted inside heart. Unfortunately, Lurker wasn't quite strong enough to contain the Cassette, so his body has slowly been breaking down over time, and the Cassette itself has been chipping little by little, producing the Nexal Shards. Lurker showed some of these to the others and they began studying them, trying to find a way to use them, while some of the other shards were misplaced, briefly falling into the possession of the Depth Lords before being passed on to others, such as the Deteriora. One of the experiments the Overseers tried with the Shards was the Nexalvus Ghosts series. Mechs designed to harness the shards' power and, to a small degree, warp reality in battle. However when the Bereft Underworld emerged, the Nexalvus Ghosts went missing.
