Description For school. 9x12 sketchbook. 4B, 2B and 2H pencils. It took about 2 hours.

Well I drew my left hand again for a second time but this time I included some of my arm. My fingers are too short in this drawing and I hate doing finger nails. I do like how this one has more shading.

I will be moving to scraps in a few days, I can to better (example: [link] )

EDIT 12/29/07: Moved to scraps.

Nice work , yeah, I hate nails too but eventually if you just practice on scrap for an hour or so, just finger nails, you will get it

Cheers,

Paul

When I do hands, I normally try to avoid finger nails. Next time I do a hand I will make sure I include the finger nails.

I could "if there was a way" lol, to show you my way to make nails, it's simple yet effective. Maybe i'll do a sketch of how I make them, post it, and it may help you.

Cheers,

Paul

A close look -- I think the reason your fingers came out short is that they were bent and thus a bit foreshortened -- it looks like dithering between bent-or-not, at the bent length but straightened out.

Yeah, you already know what's wrong with it. Doing fingernails can be tough. It might help to do one from a photo, very large, focusing on the fingernail and tip of finger exactly. I know that when I do fingernails I try to imply more than describe exactly. Also it doesn't help that mine are distorted like so many other things around me and if I draw them accurately they look like a mistake.

Enjoy! I know you are getting so far with your hand studies that it's wonderful.

I need to do my right hand... but that is the hand I draw with.... so it is a little hard! lol

Oh, no kidding. But that's where a webcam shot could come in handy.

Yea, if I do that I would probably have my hand holding a pencil or something.

That would rock! If you combine references, you can take your drawing of your hand, photograph it at the same angle and do your hand holding a pencil drawing your hand, which would be a bit of a mind-teaser if it's the same hand you're drawing!
