Description
8.5x11 sketchbook with Prang Warp-Up charcoal (soft and medium). This took about 15 minutes. This was done the same night I did: [link] I was in a charcoal mood, and I felt like drawing a tree too. I didn't do the top because I didn't feel like doing the leaves.
I really like this drawing. It is very simple looking but if you look closely there is some more going on.
I had fun doing it too! I didn't smudge at all in this. For the tree I put down the lighter charcoal and then used the darker to add the darker areas in the bark. To do the grass I started to add it and I didn't like it. I used my kneaded eraser and lifted up what charcoal I could and then started over again. It looks a lot better than what it did!

Gorgeous bark texture! The base looks a little stiff as the roots dive into the ground, it's plausible but might be improved with a few clumps of weeds around and between them, it's a little stark without that. I usually make roots a bit bumpier and more knotted, these go straight into the ground. But I've seen trees do that and so I'm willing to think that's just how THIS tree looked!
Great texture. I love this!

I didn't really use a reference for this, I kind of did it from memory. That is why the roots don't look good. I still like it though, especially the texture!

Ahh. Yeah, I know what you mean and I've done roots like that. It is a big step up from just "telephone pole cut off at the ground" style rootless trees I've seen, so my suggestion is to just add a few loose strokes for brush and grass to break the smooth lines and not otherwise change it.

Thanks! I may play around with it.

Oh good! It's such a great drawing that if you add a detail like that to improve it, it'll be perfect.
