Hey, if you are curious to my eye texture setup: www.edwardleuf.org/x/BlenderCy…

That is quite good. Trying to learn the ways of the Blender myself, but I still don't recognize or understand a good number of tools from my days on Bryce, 3D Max and Maya. While yes I could have stayed with them, I find Cycles to have more... power? options? too many options? Well, recently my copy of 3D Max refuses to register and I don't want to spend money on the latest version, and there is something in Maya that just won't import Source Models correctly.
Though I am a little split about something... Redo the hair with hair, or keep the mesh. Though I have barely any skills for remaking the hair, or applying a fine "hair texture" (right type of "volume" for the right fuzz or something like that).
You mentioned something about an eye rig. Is it like an actual ball in that head of hers? For me, I couldn't fathom a proper sphere working in that, so I redid the textures and mixed it in a way so that there are 3 layers one can control individually. Well, the white is white (until I make it blood shot) so that is scalable Iris and scalable Pupil, each having a bump map to indent the texture. My most complex texture to date. Though not sure if I got the gloss right...
There's so much I want to learn, and so much I feel I can't be bothered to learn. I have some ambitious plans, which is why I redid the eye textures, and it would involve interiors of, say, The Golden Oaks Library, and I'm not good at organic modeling...
Hm... Would the entirety of Ponyville and Sweet Apple Acres be too much for Blender to Render...?

Holy shit
Yup. I definitely need to learn Blender. Look so hard compared to SFM tho... Also, my pc is shiet so doing something like this would probably blow it up
Small question, did you convert the models from Source Engine yourself?

Hey man sorry I missed your question! Yeah it just takes a few minutes to convert the models from source to Blender. The way I do it is:
1: Use Crowbar to decompile the model into a format that Blender understands
2: Use VTFEdit to convert the textures into a format Blender understands
3: Append the blend file with my pony eye rig and parent that to the model.
4: Assign textures
5: Shrink everything so they're not 60 feet tall.
The hair on this one was just me messing with her hair for hours and hours. Particle hair looks pretty, though!
SFM takes about the same amount of oomph from your computer as Blender. If you can run SFM, you can run Blender.

Don't worry about the late answer
I've never heard about Crowbar. I might give Blender a try now that I have a new computer.. The sad thing is that rendering takes a shitload of time on Blender due to Ray Tracing, compared to SFM, but it looks soo good.. That's what I meant when talking about how it would have like killed the laptop I used. Even for a 4790k or a 970 if using CUDA is very time consuming. I need to check if using CUDA takes less time than using the cpu, if not I'll wait to get a better cooling since I've downclocked it to avoid overheating (shitty Intel stock cooler).
About the hair, that's the great part about Blender (aside Ray Tracing of course), with liquid and cloth simulation. Hell, you can even make fucking fur with it, it just takes a shitton of time. I think it would be awesome if they implemented NVIDIA Gameworks shit in some way, since it can simulate physics, hair and fur (and now even grass) pretty nicely without a lot of power needed. It probably wouldn't look as good as how Blender does it, but it would be a nice compromise between quality and time. Don't know if it would be possible though, since they're specifically made for games..
Welp, I'm gonna go play videogames, so that I can later on regret it because I could have done something more productive, like learning Blender (or 3dsMax since I have it), or do stuff with SFM. But videogames are fun!

WOW!! This has got to be one of the coolest Twilight pictures that I have ever seen! LOVE it, the texture of her mane and eyes, her expression, the frown on her nose, the setting... Everything! Amazing work! ^^

Wow! So many comments suddenly! Yay Equestria Daily <3
The background is actually an 8000x4000 image that I've made look bad with DOF settings. I should have done that differently, I agree.
The hair is the cycles hair particles. Brushed her for around 10 hours to make it look that way. I could probably do it a little faster.
The eyes are done with texture projectors (a function of cameras in Blender) and the reflections in them are the environment reflecting (glossy node and diffuse node in a mix shader)

I didn't even notice the reflections in the eye. Neat!

that hair is awesome (blender particles??)
how did you do the eyes and is there a model for download???

Thanks, man! <3 The model is just the Source Filmmaker one with little modifications by me and a subsurf modifier + some cleanup and different shape keys. The hair is the Cycles version of the Blender particles with a custom texture. I think it looks so pretty when you spend some time getting the nodes right on it.

The hair and background make for a very realistic piece. Well done!

Обычно не фанат 3D пони арта, но этот выглядит очень здорово.
Может быть заднему фону немного не хватает разрешения... но в остальном действительно здорово.
