The air was moist, condensation glimmered on the cold, stone walls from the glare of a fire Ceri had started in the corner to keep warm. Ceri glanced over at the new presence in the room; a glossy brown egg sat perched in the basket normally used for food.
What the hell am I going to do with this?
Ceri thought to himself, holding tight to the pillow beneath him.
I should've just left it in the road for someone else to find. But. . .
But the nook. . . I couldn't just leave someone to go into that hell hole.
Sure, Alma was nice but. . .
No I couldn't have just left it there.
Ceri's thoughts where interrupted by a sharp pain in his stomach followed by a low rumble. He wasn't able to eat that day, he had dumped all of the food that he had gotten at the market on the ground. Maybe it would still be there tomorrow? But no, there's far to many puckoo around the area for that. He'd have to go hunting tomorrow
What a pain.
The crackling noise of the flames as they danced to and fro drowned out any sounds of crickets or owls so common to these parts.
What a nice noise. I always hated crickets anyway.
His mind shifted back to the egg.
What am I going to do with you? I can't subject you to the nook.
I know. I could give you to a friend. Well. If I had any.
Ceri gave a silent chuckle to himself.
I guess I'll just have to keep you here.
I'm sorry.
I shouldn't have taken you.
But. But at least you won't be there.
It's not the best place in the world.
Sometimes beetles get in.
One time there was a snake.
But it's dry.
And it's safe.
I can create fire you know.
I took a class recently.
I burnt myself a few times but.
I still had fun.
Well, I guess that's a bit of a lie.
The class isn't quite over yet,
but it's ending soon.
Tomorrow actually haha.
But still.
I can keep us warm.
I don't make a lot of money.
Only the stuff that I get from sell left overs from my hunts.
Many nights want for food.
But.
But you won't want for a home.
I'm a bit.

I'm not very good.

Ceri had shifted, now focusing his gaze completely on the egg.

Ceri's gaze seemed to focus on something in the distance, something far away, something out of reach. A twang of sadness dappled in the warm purple eyes of the onlooker, but only for a moment before turning back to the egg.
Goodnight egg.

I'm sorry.
His eyes slowly began drooping. One blink, then two. Soon Ceri was encompassed by sleep. The fire in the corner slowly fizzled out over the coarse of a few hours. Every so often Ceri twitched in his slumber. What was he dreaming of? Who knows, but whatever it was this was one of the first nights Ceri slept decent in weeks.
