Okay, so I got my Avatar: The Last Airbender art book in the mail yesterday and spent probably 30 minutes fawning over the Fire Lord royal portraits. Then, today, I saw this awesome Deviation: [link] and thought it'd be cool to do one of Azula.So, uh, 6 hours later my eyes are bleeding but it's done. Yay!
Many, many thanks to my girlfriend for helping me out with all the finishing touches.

I really like this, I wish there were portraits for Azula and Zuko in the art book, despite the fact that Azula was never technically crowned Fire Lord (Damn it, lol). However, there might be a portrait of Fire Lord Zuko when The Legend of Korra comes out. I really like the dragons made of blue flame that you drew; and I also like how she's towering over the Earth King's palace, showing her all-important role in bringing down Ba Sing Se. As pointed out in a previous comment, I also like how her hands are positioned to reflect her unique style of Firebending and her use of lightning. I also find it interesting that Azula looks very similar to her mother and has her father's ideals, while when Zuko was crowned Fire Lord, the opposite was true for him.

If you look at their facial features, Azula really does not resemble her mother much at all, nor does Zuko look like their father. Β I don't have a facial comparison for Zuko and Ursa, but the two of them have softer features and a perpetually somber expression even when happy. Β As for Azula and Ozai...
I invite you to look at this and see what you think.
I strongly believe the point was to show that the daughter takes after the father and the son takes after the mother, in both mannerisms and appearance. Β Being female doesn't mean Azula resembles her mother, and being male doesn't mean Zuko resembles his father. Β This is actually subverted, and I salute the creators for shattering that gender-polorized perception. Β While there's a certain power to our individual perceptions, the fact remains that Azula and Ozai both have hard, angular features, while Zuko and Ursa have softer, slightly more rounded features.

Did you see the last four episodes of the show? Β Azula referred to herself as "Fire Lord Azula", as did the rest of the characters. Β The title is canon, whether or not some people think it sounds wrong. Β If anything, "Fire Lady Azula" is the one that sounds wrong. Β Being female doesn't make someone a lady, anyway, and a lady Azula is not.Β
