Description
Still a WIP.The blade was purchased from Ebay and came with the brass guard. I turned the handle on my wood lathe, and glued a metal button on the end. The scabbard is glued up from three pieces of Basswood and will be covered with leather at a later date.

is a handle on a dagger supposed to help with edge alignment, or is it not a concern on knives and was easy to make on a lathe?

I draw my inspiration in part from historical references, but I also like to add my own touches. Some historical daggers have round grips, while others have flattened of oval grips. I think it may be a personal preference and regional style thing. Because of the small size of this dagger, I decided to keep the handle round.
On other daggers and knives, after I have shaped the handles on a lathe I then flatten and shaped areas of the grip to allow indexing the blade orientation in the hand.
Here are some examples:

Antler or bone next time and do a little scrimshanding to it.

As you say! But I think carvings in antler rather then scrimshaw.

I've done both and stag/deer antler has so much more material to work with.

I know! I like your work!
I might use some knot of key work in the carvings. (I am just now a fan of the smell of working stag, but I do use a respirator)

That's a smart thing to do. Don't forget the protective eye wear.

My glasses are ballistic rated, plus I use over the glasses safety glasses or goggles with a seal around the eyes.
