Wow! Never thought I would see a familiar friend after more than 15 years since I worked on it...

I too have had the privilege of working on the RADCOM during my time in the air force. I was one of the fortunate ones to be sent to Long Island for training at the then Grumman Aerospace headquarters, where I learned to operate and maintain both the CAT-IIID and the RADCOM, for a six month period.

Since turning 50 in 2013, I transited from full-time employment as an engineer to a self-published author. To date, I had written two books on PCB Reverse Engineering.
You can read more about it in my blog at: visio-for-engineers.blogspot.com

Lately, I am toying with the idea of writing a series of books on automatic test equipment (ATE). In my 30 years of engineering career, I had worked on a number of these platforms, and the very first volume I have in mind is the RADCOM since it was the first ATE I came into contact with. But I'm not sure how well received it will be, or whether there is any interest out there to warrant my time and effort to do so.

Anyway, it's always good to meet someone like you who've worked on a similar tester. It's a deja-vu feeling all over again... (sniff-sniff!)

Eight years working on this bench and seven others; but it all ended when I retired in 2004.

Very cool! I trained on it at NAS Whidbey Island, in Washington State. I Have seen, but not worked with the CA-IIID and the CASS ATE.

Thank you for the link, I did go take a quick look at it.

Interesting idea for a series of publications, I think it needs to be done due to how hard it is to find the information in one spot.

You might be able to help Diogo Inverno of Indra Sistemas, in Madrid; he asked me some questions about the HP computer of the RADCOM that I could not answer. But you, with your engineering background, might be able to help him. His email is dmorais@indra.es . Apparently the Spanish Navy still uses the RADCOM platform, but is having problems in supporting it.

And greetings to you, my brother RADCOM technician.
Surly, a blast from the past!ย ย

Just wrote to Diogo. Not sure how much I can help but I'll try to recall what I knew from memory (it's been more than 15 years...)

By the way, do you know of any forum or discussion group for ex-Navy personnel who worked on RADCOM or even CAT-IIID?
It would be nice to touch base with them and create enough interest before I set off to write the book (it's a big undertaking, after all).

Do email me more photos of the RADCOM or accessories, if you have them. That would be greatly appreciated!

All we can do is network and try.

No forums that I am aware of, but I had never looked until now. I will look into it from my end.

I will see what un-classified information and photos I have from my time working on the RADCOM.

Hello,

My name is Diogo Inverno and I work for the Spanish company Indra Sistemas in Madrid.ย

Iยดm interested to know if you have some knowledge over the HP computer 1000 installed on that bench test above. On that case, and if you want, I would like to speak with you about it.
Indra works with the Spanish Navy, and on their fleet they still maintain and work the described bench test.ย

Best Regards & Thank you

Well, it has been about 14 years since I have worked on the Radcom and HP 1000. I don't have any of the manuals or supporting information anymore, so I am not sure if I could be of any help to you.

I do remember working with the older mass storage device before they replaced it with the magnetic/optical disc system installed above the computer in this photo.

My job before I retired from the Navy was more of a support role for the bench, where I was in charge of the support equipment to run and maintain the test bench. Repairing/replacing damaged cables, keeping track of fixtures, things like that.

Interesting that there are Radcom's still in operation, and thank you for the information. They were to be phased out from the US Navy within a couple year from my retirement.

My best regards, and regret that I am not a useful resource for you.

Hello,ย

Would you be able to help me out with one the technical doubt I have?ย

The issue I have, is related with the HP 1000 (P/N from Northrop Grumman); do you remember out to opperate it?ย

If you would accept, please drop me in email to dmorais@indra.es.ย

iยดve tried to contact NG and HP, and they have no capabilities to support it.ย

Best Regards & Thank you

Give me a few days to go through some things I have in storage, I may come up with something. I will email you to let you know whether or not I have more information.

Does the computer have a separate mass storage unit that is the large magnetic disk, or the smaller optical/magnetic disk (the unit above the computer in this image)? ย
