Description

Species Name: Wolong
Average Lifespan: 14 years
Habitat: Hot springs, luxury resorts, rich homes.
Population/Distribution: A fully-domesticated species for over a thousand years, Wolongs do not exist in the wild. Wolongs are bred by a number of the ancient families, particularly those of the high blood, and owning a wolong is a sign of wealth. You'll find a few wolongs among nobility or the incredibly wealthy in the Empire, but the only place with any significant number is Song-Lu.

Size: Males can be up to 1m (3'3") from nose to tail, while females average 0.75m (2'5"). The tail is roughly a third of the total length. Both sexes are on average 25cm (10") tall.

Physical Characteristics:
Soft fur, three clawed toes on each paw. Very light body. The female's tail tapers to a simple point, while the male's tail ends with a rounded point flanked by two spikes on each side. The male uses his more impressive tail as a part of his mating display. Fur comes in five distinct color variations; they can be striped or plain but never mixed. The Imperial color is traditionally considered the most favored due to the positive associations with the color red. It is considered auspicious for the eye color to compliment the fur. A few facial variations exist; the depicted long-nose is the most common, but trends sometimes call for short or shaped noses, and some breeders specialize in providing these. Fur length and fullness also varies with breed, with the short-hair versions being the more common. Caring for a long-hair wolong can be close to a full-time occupation for a servant, and they're considered quite impractical - you're unlikely to see them outside of the possessions of a high blood family's Most Honored.

Behavior: Friendly, calm and loyal if treated well. Elegant and cleanly animals who move with grace, and like to play. They also enjoy sleeping, especially while floating above the surface of a hot spring, and this along with their tendency to demand copious amounts of affection at their own leisure has earned them the popular nickname "sleepy emperors".

Diet:
Fish, various plants found in conjunction with natural hot springs. They are quite picky about the quality of their food.
Uses: Pets.

Additional Information: Wolongs are able to float a short distance above any surface, but do not display any magical abilities beyond this. They don't like to get wet, but enjoy fishing from their elevated position. Wolongs will often choose a favorite person from whom they'll demand the most affection. Typically there's a clear correlation between the providing of food and becoming the wolong's favorite. A content wolong will show their appreciation by purring. Adult, fertile wolongs can become very territorial and aggressive during the mating season, for that reason as well as to assure control over their breed, breeders will only sell or gift away neutered or infertile animals. A wolong can scratch or bite if angered, but this is incredibly rare. Even though their claws cannot be retracted, it is just as unusual to receive injuries while playing with a wolong.

Species provided for use in Arcem-Alva only.
