Description i enjoyed doing the watercolor part but i struggled with the inking. maybe i shouldn't have inked it but the image is so small and i didn't know how else i'd put the details in the woman's face. i won't be able to work on this again but i might work on a similar style soon. suggestions&comments encouraged.

watercolor and ink on paper
sabine 2001

_ Update

2.23.02

replaced the screenshot with the latest repro. gave up on the ink and used pencil instead. thanks to the ArtBot for the tip. ;]

++ now the fiery sphere that she's holding doesn't look like *that thing* anymore.

Just noticed this on your featured deviation area... this is wonderful, I have a watercolor submitted (spoons) it was quite difficult, but worth it in the end. I think the womans face is nice, you didn't do too much to it. Its easy to overdo faces. If I had any extra money, I'd buy a print of this.

Oh, and I like your icon, the bright orange really stands out against DA's background

Gotta stop readin' ppl's journals ;j
I adore this..
With the mix of the person and the hair and the sceneryness; freakin' awesome.. and mebbe I'm just being' weird in my interpretness but with the 'glow' going from underground to above it; sorta like the supernatural or fantasy coming into the real world in places.. it rocks
And yeah I can understan how people might have mistaken it for an acorn before..
Shush, it's an acorn!

The hard copy of "glow" was one of the last objects left in Mari's apartment. It was hanging high above a window (that's why her family couldn't get to it readily).
I told her that it made her room look higher, it was haning higher then all other pictures / windows.
She liked it a lot - she told me though that the "heart" in the womans hand looked like balls in a scrotum.
....
I removed it while the family prayed by the bathroom for the last time. I inserted it among folders, in a box with her vine plants.

I loved this before and after you inked it. I think you did a good job. With watercolors its difficult to ink it just right, not overinking it. I think you did a great job inking just the essentials. cool!

I like the hair a lot in the picture. I wish I had some scans of my drawing teacher's water colors. He had a wonderful style and always chanted "NIGHT TO DAY NIGHT TO DAY DARK STROKES TO LIGHT STROKES"

he was a bit cracked out on coffee.

.............such a gentle perspective in all of your pieces. Maybe that's why I associate so much of your pieces with motherhood... the undying love of a mother. Compassion and endless giving... yes. That's why. It's pieces like this that make me wish that Devart prints were available for anything. This is beautiful, and leaves me in quiet reverence like all your pieces.

i love watercolors because of the sense you get of flow/flux/motion. and this work definitely has that- with the wee bit of coaxing you did with your brush. very nice!

I think what I like about it is that you weren't afraid to leave the bottom without color. I love the use of color too, and the inking... geesh. beautiful work!

great watercolor work Ruth....I always enjoy your pieces of course heh ....if you want to get the detail to show in her face and don't want to ink it, try using pencil to put the details in...I know it sounds weird, but it's worked for me...and then you don't have to buy a tiny brush and mix dark flesh tones till dawn while trying to keep the paper wet great work (rock)

Wow, that is a beautiful piece. I love the color use in the background especially. Sets a nice mood. The inking looks great too... I'm not sure I'd like the overall effect as much without it. Gives it more definition... greater presence... but that's just my preference.
