Everything happened so very fast.

In mere moments of coming out of the wormhole, ten ships in the front lines came under fire from an unknown source. Successful volleys of phaser fire pierced the fleet like butterflies on canvas and scoring several direct hits as a result. The USS Gibraltar got nailed dead to rights as the Miranda-class ship shuddered and shook from the attack and then quietly exploded into oblivion; a victim of a lucky shot.

The other ships in the line fared no better, but they were able to spread out further to avoid becoming a mass casualty. Of course, it would've been eminently helpful if they knew where to strike first. But the sensors on much of the fleet were still blinded by the satellite system powering the vortex behind them

For all intent and purpose, the fleet had no choice but to dodge what they could and make a run for it.

Because sitting here was asking for a load of trouble.
