Description As you are well aware by now thanks to my deviant posts, I am a huge fan of Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal. The animation is fluid, the backgrounds are gorgeous, the music fits well with the scene, the action is brutal and memorable along with being able to tell a story with no dialogue. But, there is one thing that I notice with every episode thus far in the show-Fang’s size. It varies drastically depending on the scene with her in it.
For example, near the end of the first episode when Fang approaches Spear at the beach (left picture), she’s at a size where she just look him straight in the eyes without moving her head up or down. Meanwhile, when her and Spear are fighting over the hoofed herbivore carcass in River of Snakes (right picture), she’s at a size where Spear can literally fit inside her entire mouth like a real Tyrannosaurus (which she has been directly confirmed to be). I’ve also noticed that in the scene after the left picture, Fang goes to a large size when her and Spear become a duo and in the scene after the right picture when they notice the snakes, she goes to a small size. The only episode where she stays big is in Scent of Prey, except for when Spear is checking on her in the cave.
I have a theory for why this is so; since Primal relies on visual story-telling with no dialogue, Genndy and his crew change Fang’s size to reflect on the tone of the scene and her relationship with Spear. Fang being small could represent how she is on Spear’s side and is docile towards him, as the smaller something is the less threatening one perceives it as. In real life, many people will try to approach a horse but many will hesitate to approach an elephant. For Spear’s fight with Fang, I think Genndy and his team had Fang get big to make her more intimidating to Spear while in Scent of Prey, they made Fang big to make it more challenging for Spear to take care of her.
So what do you guys think about this? Let me know in the comments down below and have a great day.

Primal is property of Genndy Tartakovsky and Adult Swim.
