Fssh - I tried as an excercise trying to draw that little tail bob that forced John off animating tails. (I actually like drawing tails once you get them down as a spinal extension...they have so much emotion to play with and subtle acting)
It is literally-a walk. Simply a walk. No bounce, no odd contacts or breakdowns, nothing. Ren has the insect face the whole time. The tail barely needs to be there. You straight ahead run that damn thing. Now i understand your comments about hating his style, if you're judging from these cartoons.
His new straight ahead shit for Idents and etc. works so much better just because he knows what the fuck he's doing MUCH more than he was when drawing R+S.

And you remember that one time he did this whole post? [link] The disturbing bit about this was that i have favorited at least three of those art pieces. XD especially the latex bolt thing.

Well while I'm not a fan of those things in that furry article, I have spent half a year in FA and I have actually found a great deal of really talented cartoon artists there, people I would consider much more talented then him ironically. IMO John K is just a nut who draw preschool doodles on lined paper (somehow constituting as production drawings)and calling it the next revolution in animation.

fA has some artists who are really quite good with really unique styles. (I reason that my poses, the probably least generic part of my work, are the type of thing that passes through hundreds of people doing production.)

It would be a revolution if anybody gave a shit. Seriously, he's not fooling anyone. Even his good stuff is copying Bob Clampett.

I'm hoping that sometime i can take part in the movement in a few years when animation starts to become the domain of Small collectives. ^^

No no......sadly there are many people even talented people (shouldn't they know better) who still think that his the animation god he likes to tot himself around as being. I think maybe much of it is that people are blinded but their own nostalgia that they can't see him from what he really is. Even then at the end of the day not even a positive role model should be idolized because we are all flawed individuals with our own strengths and short comings.

He simply is good at convincing people that the only good animation is the type that involves exploding eyeballs.
He also attracts a fuckton of animation students who dislike the idea of 'learning to draw.'

Learning to draw is very important because if you wanna exaggerate something it really helps to know how to draw it properly, otherwise I find it's usually a crude approximation. I will be the first to admit that would likely be better it I was actually educated on how to draw things rather then just learning on my own.....damn money issues. It's kinda depressing seeing people follow him words blindly because to me John K represents everything that an artist should not become.

I started off as the Fred Moore type, I actually find lines of action in the shit i drew as a 7 year old. (Even back then i was drawing like hell - i probably got my 100,00th out in middle school.) And even then, I had to do fucktons of life drawing, and tracing, and etc. just to get to where i am now. Most of my drawing skills have been gleaned from reading Bridgeman and Nikolaides, and it's still at its' current awful level.

JohnK doesn't need to be like that. I mean, i like scribner and detest CalArts, but this guy is just insane.

John K also has built the concept in his own head that he is beyond criticism which for anyone is full of crap because in reality no one is....there is always something you can do better and if you think there isn't then you don't ever improve, infact often decline without that kind of motivation.....John K's blog is proof of this because while I'm not a fan I will admit the he used to draw better then this....[link]

he really did. ^^

He thinks that there's nobody better than him, so there's no way for him to look up to someone to improve. It probably affects things.

Tru dat - you also need to feel you need improvement. That's kinda a given.

You don't need to close your mind at all, that's the evil beauty of it! 0.e You don't change what you don't think needs changing! This is why we had monarchies for thousands of years, right? XD

He's blocked all animation that doesn't fit his standards out of his head, even the good stuff. (He calls Sylvain Chomet 'depressing as hell' and 'suicide inducing.')

LiimLsan In reply to Slainmonkey [2011-11-23 13:42:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...
He doesn't know that Walt Disney completely hated purple as a color. He would actively had the artists paint over any instance of that. The combination of both him and Walt Peregoy being gone from the studio was an excuse to use the muted colors and inappropriate purples, and it just kinda got out of hand.

And it's called 'sepia', John. It's all atmospherics.

I have a different theory to colour at the moment, and that's that all colours can be used well within the right context.....though I generally try to avoid things being too primary

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LiimLsan In reply to Slainmonkey [2011-11-25 03:34:13 +0000 UTC]

My little pet theory is there are two things you want to avoid : biliousness if you have a lot of orange and pink and purple (Rescuers Down Under, anyone?), and a great many colors all being the same saturation (Quest For Camelot / The Swan Princess, anyone?)

You can do any color you can see, really, as long as it's in good taste; but there's precious few ways to pull off either all primary or all rainbow. I generally avoid it altogether

One of my little tricks with this is that if i'm working digitally, I try to mess with the color slider's RGB ratio to get interesting results i never would have come up with had i simply been thinking 'I want Red there.'
I'm not exactly Bobby Bigloaf when it comes to describing color, so I need that. Or more organic stuff.

As I said....it's all about how colours are used that makes or breaks them

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LiimLsan In reply to Slainmonkey [2011-11-26 20:41:32 +0000 UTC]

pretty much. You ever seen some of the colors Helen Frankenthaler acheived? Makes me wish i could get some of that in animation.

Slainmonkey In reply to LiimLsan [2011-11-27 00:53:37 +0000 UTC]

that would be interesting to see actually

LiimLsan In reply to Slainmonkey [2011-11-27 02:52:53 +0000 UTC]

It would, wunnit? Almost all the exploratory layouts I find I think of modernist painters and architects...in layouts I have an odd resemblance to everything from Constructivist sculpture to Frank Lloyd Wright and Alvar Aalto (my personal fav architect ^^) to the 'Elegies to the Spanish Republic'.

I'd also love to see or do something in the style of Franz Kline. If it's projected, even better. ^^ his stuff is so immensely powerful and relies on light and grand size... it'd work great when done in a movie theatre as some film fest work...

looll john k? niceee this pretty much explains him. i used to think he was awesome and i saw some interviews and he kinda seemed a bit assholey but i didnt want to believe it..until i saw some people on here who actually worked with him and said he really was a scrubb-y ahole. and my heart was kinda broken cause i really looked up to the guy's work.. :/

anywhoo this comic is great, awesome job

John K is pretty much the ultimate rude awakening for cartoon artists like ourselves. However through my disapointment in him I learned a few things....he was never the one who influenced me (Bob Camp was which is why I spotted a similar influence in you) and I grew to have more of an appreciation of the other more talented animators who worked on Ren & Stimpy.

Same with me. I've researched it a bit more, and the other workers on Ren and Stimpy have inspired me a lot more than john k. I always loved the expressions that where simple yet expressive, not the ones that where so insanely over the top. personally i cannot STAND things like ren and stimpy adult party or the ripping friends..its so over exaggerated and pointless and just gross. ugghh ew

Slainmonkey In reply to kanoomoo [2011-11-18 09:55:15 +0000 UTC]

What I loved about Bob Camps style is how the expressions looked natural and would only go insane when there was actually some comedic effect to it. This actually became a better ballance in season 3 and it's part of why I personally think the games episodes are better. Also (don't mean to whore out)I made a second comic to this that I personally think is funnier.....also me and a friend plan to make them into a webcomic......ofcourse the certain animator will never be named in them haha.

and haha i saw it, you should totally make it into a comic. everyone who gets it would just be like loooooll
some people here on da actually worked with him im sure they would love it xD
