Description

(NOTE: EWAW is a Thai RP community based on anime Hetalia Gakuen format, just that the characters are towns/cities/regions instead of countries.)

Somewhat a 'birthday gift' for my original character(the guy in the pic), whom I have created based on the Croatian city of Osijek. And since today (Dec. 2nd) is the city day of Osijek, I guess it can be considered as his birthday.

The uniform is from traditional Osijek's guard unit called something like Osijek hawk (not too sure, that's what I got from google translate).

EDIT:: Because I have never uploaded full profile of my Hetalia/EWAW OCs in English anywhere aside from the original Thai one I made to join the community, so I decided to add his profile text here since I don't have time to draw a decent pic to make a profile submission separately.

(My apologize in advanced for bad, and sometime confusing, English Orz)

History::

First mention of Osijek dated back to 1196 in a charter of Hungarian King Emerik. It was an area directly ruled under the Hungary Kingdom during the period after Croatia and Hungary joined in a personal union. During this period, Osijek is a prominent market town on the Drava river and until early 16th century, the town's rulers mostly consisted of Hungarian noblemen.

In 1526 during the Ottoman campaign against Hungary Kingdom, Osijek was conquered by the Ottoman without a major fight, yet being almost completely destroyed. During this time the Ottoman rebuilt Osijek in oriental architectures and it became a strategic location for further campaign against the weakening Hungary Kingdom. With that the Sultan Sulaiman I ordered the construction of 'Sulaiman Bridge' - the 8 kilometers length wooden bridge from Osijek crossing the Drava River and the swampy area of Baranja on the opposite bank until it reached Darda, a small settlement north of Osijek. It was the most prominent attraction of Osijek in the Ottoman period and also made it easier for the Ottoman to move their army deeper into the territory of Hungary. There had never been a major uprising against the Ottoman in roughly 160 years that Osijek was under the Ottoman empire.

Then in 1687, the Habsburg army with the help of Croats captured Osijek back from Ottoman empire. The Suleiman Bridge was ordered to be burned down, preventing the Ottoman from using it in attempt to recapture the town. From some time after the town came back to European power, it was a military frontier that buffered between the Habsburg and Ottoman empire. After tearing down the oriental buildings from the Ottoman era, the Habsburgs ordered a construction of fortress/administration center in place of the old town - which forced the citizen to relocate to both upstream and downstream of Drava River from the original town center. The settlement upstream became 'Gornji Grad' and the downstream one 'Donji Grad' while the old core of Osijek became Tvrđa.

After the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699, Osijek and the area of present Slavonia Region were securely under the rule of the Habsburg so development started. From the frontier under military administration, Osijek became the capital of Kingdom of Slavonia - a province of Habsburg and later Austrian Empire, which included some part of Vojvodina in Serbia today. This was the start of the period when Osijek flourished the most, the city was constantly developed to the point that at one time Osijek was the largest city in Croatia(early 19th century) and also the first city in Croatia to have tram system(in 1884). In this period, many Germans were settled in the city by the Austrian order and the Germans were a prominent part of Osijek's population until after WWII.

During the revolution in 1848/1849 Osijek along with Kingdom of Slavonia sided with Kingdom of Croatia which supported the Austrians in the fight against the Hungarians. After the compromise in 1868, Kingdom of Slavonia was joined to Kingdom of Croatia and become the Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia.

WWI and the creation of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes(later Yugoslavia) changed Osijek from culturally and commercially developed city to mainly industrial city. The cultural development which continuously added to the city during the Austria-Hungary period nearly stopped completely and Osijek began to lose its importance.

In WWII after the invasion of Yugoslavia in April 1941, Osijek was included in the Independent State of Croatia under the support of Nazi. During this time the prominent Jewish community in Osijek was wiped out and Osijek suddenly found itself became a border town after Hungary annexed Baranja on the other side of Drava River. Because there was an oil refinery in the city, while Osijek could avoid heavy fighting until near the end of WWII, it was bombed by the Allies in June 1944. WWII caused a major change in census of Osijek's population; the Germans and the Jews disappeared almost completely and more Serbs started settling in the city in their place to the point that by the time the war broke out in 1991, Serbs made up around 20% of the population.

(I'm reluctant to write about his role during the Croatian War of Independence in details because it's possible to offend both Serbs and Croats so I'll just go with basic facts)

-There was a police chief of Osijek (Josip Reihl-Kir - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josip_Re… ) who tried to prevent the arms confrontation between local Serbs and Croats before the war broke out but he was killed before the peace talk could be settled.

-After that, the armed Serbs and JNA corp from Novi Sad attacked Osijek and constantly bombarded the city for almost half a year with tanks, artillery and even fighter jets. This caused a lot of damages and loss of human lives.

-At the worst point, Osijek was surrounded by the Serb + JNA force on three sides (north across the Drava, east and south). The only open path to contact with the rest of Croatia was the west toward Nasice.

-The Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Syrmia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_… - area the surrounded Osijek under the Serb force since the end of 1991) was the only area that was still occupied by Serbs after Operation Storm in August 1995. It was also the only area that was returned to Croatia without arms confrontation with the help of UN in 1998.

Personality::

He's quite attached to Hungary(being that Hungary directly ruled him since his childhood and he was happiest during the period as part of Hungarian land in Austria-Hungary after 1868) and even nowadays the Osijek-Baranja county, the county that he is the administrative center of, has the highest number of Hungarian minority in Croatia. Therefore he's quite reluctant to accept the facts when Hungary did something badly to Croatia, much to the annoyance of other Croatian cities especially Zagreb.

In his childhood, he was an obedient child(didn't seem to have any major uprising in his history no matter who was ruling him back then) with an interest in literature. He's not a type to hold grudge, he never hated the Ottoman(now Turkey) for conquering him, just troubling that why Ottoman had to hurt him(ruining the old town that built during Hungarian rule) and why Ottoman had to fight Hungary. Naturally, he's forgiving and peaceful.

However, after the war in 20th century (both WWII and Yugoslav War)...his personality somewhat changed. He realized that his nature of being forgiving and peaceful was being a weak point that was exploited by some people he considered close to him. Therefore he began to build up a barrier - an emotionless mask to protect himself. Nowadays unless interacting with other towns in Slavonia or his sister cities/twin towns, no one would ever catch him smile or display any emotion at all. It's his way to cope with the 'survivor guilt'(en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Survivor… ) he suffered since the war in early 90's...and watch out, he has one heck of a mood swing because of that. The question to guarantee this mood swing is asking if he feels bad to have a Serbian city(Subotica) as sister city because he never really views Subotica as Serbian but a Hungarian city being stuck in Serbia.

Still, if somehow you can manage to get through those barrier, deep down he's still the same caring guy he used to be before the period of Yugoslavia changed him.

After the Croatian War of Independence, he's kinda at odd with Croatia, Zagreb and popular cities on the Adriatic coast because he feels he's being deliberately ignored (most investment either go to Zagreb or popular tourist towns on the coast and Slavonia is the poorest region in Croatia).

Briggs Myers' Personality Type::
ISFJ

Relationship::

Croatian cities in Slavonia:: Get along with best and he cares for them a lot

Croatian cities on Adriatic coast:: Doesn't like them and envies them for being constantly promoted to tourists

Zagreb:: Biased bossy person

Subotica:: Surprising in a good relationship and actually quite protective if someone attacks Subotica for 'being Serbian'

Serbian cities in Srem district:: Torn between being wary of them and missed them because they were part of Kingdom of Slavonia and later Kingdom of Croatia-Slavonia

Other Serbian cities:: ...Bleh (ignores but not going to attack them or anything)

Other sister cities/twin towns:: Usually lets his guard down more than when he interacts with most people

Thank you for the comment.

There is still some information that I couldn't find on internet yet, like how the city was directly affected because of the conflict during WWI. A few months ago I saw a news that there was a photo exhibition of what happened in Osijek during WWI. Just wish I could have go to see it even though all the photo narration in Croatian probably doesn't make sense to me!
