Description Was hoping to finish up tonight but ran out of time. This is an intermediate class take with an unusually long wheelbase for a four-wheeled tank engine but I've always felt Awdry's Percy models were too small for the tasks the character undertakes in the books and so wanted to make him close to Dalby/TV size. To that end the firebox grate is in front of the rear axle a la' James Manson's beefcake 272 Class and the perfectly balanced Dolgoch. This arrangement would be unsuitable for very tight radiuses but I see the design being built for a network with a modest distance rather than one that just needs a short range shunter and the wheelbase is still smaller than say the dockside Mersey class which were built without flanges on their middle drivers.

This upload will be tidied up tomorrow but any feedback in the meantime is welcome.

Cheers. Had hoped to finish this one by now but decided to try and have another crack at Avonside research (wanting to give him a more squarish cab cutting like the real Percy did).

From what I can tell the upper cutting went from elliptical to flat somewhere between 1910 to 15 (bit late really but trying to balance his RWR looks against real history).

A very clever photoshop even if the driving wheels are a bit too spread out. Even if Percy physical real engine basis is not as direct as Gordon and Toby of the first seven engines, but I think that it blends in nicely with the simple short story origins of the Railway Series.

Thanks, it's tricky when you try to include Percy's generous cab and rear bunker! As a compromise the 0-6-0 firebox has been shrunk down slightly along with the barrel length (at the time of typing this you can still see where the original chimney would of been) but I didn't want to make him too small like Trojan or create a ridiculous overhang. Think the wheelbase is 8ft or very close to it which is a bit greater than the G&SWR's heavy weight 272s

and the old Raven class annoyingly,

but it's still better than most six wheeled shunters and he shouldn't 'box' like Duncan does when getting up to speed.

Nice to know, I was worried of bouncing too.

Just come across the LNWR's' 4ft shunter' which also has an 8ft wheelbase. Interestingly they were used at docksides and with the rear overhang being minimal the side play while shunting across tight radius was reduced. In all honesty i've never heard of an 0-4-0T buffer locking or straining the couplings but still i'll take the 8ft wheelbase precedent to justify 'Dalby Percy'.

Thanks for some more greater information. When it comes to the 0-4-0T wheel arrangement. The search for appropriate sized bunkers is pretty small.

There's definitely more out there than I had realised but yeah rear bunker 0-4-0 tank engines weren't that common here and I have seen some with extremely slim ones.

In terms of capacity nothing comes close to the 4 ton bunkers behind James Manson's 272s. The six were the heaviest four wheelers ever built in Britain and apparently when the first left the shop it toppled over onto its cylinders!
Anywho I don't think any B3s gained grills in their lives surprisingly despite the spectacles being high up enough not be obstructed and so if Hunslet or anyone else were to mod Percy with them he'd be ahead of most, even Percy

Looking at GWR 101 again I decided to check its wheelbase as well and it came to 9ft! That's the record as far as i'm concerned so i'll finish tidying up the edit tomorrow.

A steam engine topping over it's cylinders, very interesting. Love your research dedication for similar engines for the first six locomotive characters along with a couple other Thomas fans.

Good to hear No promises on when but the idea is to make a RWS version out of this featuring coal rails, conventional wheels, separate dome etc.

Will you draw this engine's body on a chassis as Thomas please?

You mean edit it onto a drawing of the E2's chassis? I could but having a square on scan would be helpful. Not Payne/Dalby style like the above but I do have plans to make a before and after drawing for Thom at some point.
