Description *Bugger, put 'you're' instead or 'your'. Will amend at some point and I think i'm gonna redo this one anyway as I've only just picked up on James's boiler being way undersized in the RWS against his basis.

Very impressive!   Love that you added their TVS faces for this RMS illustration. James' face says it all...

Lovely work

Yes I also loved the TV style faces used in the Christopher annuals, the CGI versions just aren't the same. I wouldn't mind having another go at this one though as I want to make James more like his basis (he's a bit short in length basically and the boiler shouldn't be smaller than the firebox). Anywho thanks

If you want to edit James, go for it. It's nice to see someone who likes to improve their art
You're welcome

Thomas and Percy are very cheeky on James

Percy looks more like his basis than usual.

Thanks. I'm generally trying to reinforce a more prototypical look for him in my gallery over the Dalby and TV mess. The lower smokebox area is interpretive but I like the Avonside/Hunslet of Leeds parallel design occasionally seen in the later books.

You did an excellent job at that!

It's from the pop-up book 'Percy the Small Engine and the Scarf', just click on this link to see the original image.

The illustrated TV faces go surprisingly well with Spong's illustrations.

Indeed. I usefully trial a few different samples when I make these kind of edits to see what does and doesn't work, but it's always nice when I find that Owen Bell's faces blend nicely on top of the original image

Better than the original! I've always liked that style of smokebox on Percy.

Thanks and indeed There aren't many illustrations of him with it unfortunately but I like the feature as it shows up at least some trace of his Avonside origins. Dalby's seemingly eternal 'green caterpillar' influence on Percy makes my edit look odd against common perception but I also wanted to make sure he had a more typical saddle tank, one that could actually be lifted off his boiler during an overhaul

Clive Spong again?
I do like the faces though.

Yep Spong illustration, I take it he's not your fave but do you actually hate him or something? The TV style faces though are by Owen Bell (pretty sure at least, got them from the Christopher Awdry annuals). I almost went with Kenny faces but they didn't quite suit and the Dalby samples I tried on James really looked off so that put the experimentation for Percy and Thomas in the ground before I even got to them.

Germanname

See above I will say that some of Spong's faces are quite generic as his Henry for example is practically unrecognisable, particularly the nose but for the most part I do like using his work, especially when multiple engines are involved as they are pretty good and consistent overall, where as say the Edwards fluctuate a lot. Dalby's plainer faces are the most difficult to use but there are some good exceptions such as the one I used on Captain Baxter, tend to get a lot of millage out of the turbulent James in general
Basically I'll try any RWS/annual artist when i'm experimenting with cropped samples but whatever I find works best in combination with what i'm aiming for in the scene is what results in an upload.

I don't "hate" Clive personally but he is my lease favourite Railway Series illustrator. His drawing look to simplistic for my liking, which is why Peter and Gunvor Edwards are my favourites.

That's fine, the Edwards are my favourite too, followed by Kenny and then closely by Hodges if you count him and I would of liked for any or all of them to have had longer stretches but thems the brakes. I agree some Spong illustrations are noticeably bland but once he stopped trying to imitate Dalby's style I started to quite enjoy his work overall. Anyway I can't help if you don't care for him that much and amongst the others and also some photographs there will be more of his stuff on way, in fact my next planned one will be from the same pop-up book as the above so you'll just have to put the blinkers on

That's one of things I like about his works. The facial expressions he made for the engines were just wonderful and even heart-warming at times.

John T. Kenney was also admirable. Despite having a very realistic style, I remember the humorous and cartoonish style he had when painting the engines' faces.

Is this your picture or is it taken from an annual?

The original image is from 'Percy the Small Engine and the Scarf'. It's one of the 12 pop-up books that Spong illustrated.

The faces though are from the 90's annuals, Owen Bell I believe.
