i use firealpaca to do all my art! even though it's free software i think it's one of the best art programs out there!!
i do a weird trick when i do pixel art 1 pixel thick with firealpaca though. instead of using the pixel tool (bc it's not super great for 1 pixel thick lines), i use a normal pen tool with the size set to 1.2 and anti-aliasing off! works like a charm for me!! also, for animating, firealpaca also has pretty decent animating software so that's another plus!!!!
that's just the way i do things, there are a bunch of other programs and such out there that are great for pixel art though, i would say experiment and see what you like!
