My entry for 's cover contest.
For Vol. 1 Issue 16: Night on the Town

I was racking my head and nerves constantly trying to fix or improve this but with the hours I put into this and lack of sleep with Thanksgiving and Black Friday coming up (I work in retail) I need my sleep so I'm stopping this and submitting this work and I hope that many people might enjoy this idea and the hard work I put into this. I'm never satisfied with the results of my art attempts but I hope others might like. I tried using so different programs again and coloring and art styles for the three characters presented.

I picked issue 16 to make a cover for as I'm a fan of Gwen and MJ plus I adore reading the friendship issues and issues when the two are friends. I enjoy very much the heartfelt character driven issues and overall fun issues.

Some quick inspirations for the cover, ideas, and even crafting out this Ghost Gwen that went into my head while I was making this cover:

the "face it" line and moment in the comics but now it's MJ in Peter's place with the line used on her by Gwen(s).

I like friendship and heartfelt friendly issues alot and enjoy reading and seeing MJ/Gwen friends (and maybe more) works vs love interest quarrels that is common and a bit more nasty in tone usually and only serves Peter or the one fought for. For many MJs of the Multiverse Gwen wasn't just a love rival of hers but they were good friends and her death effect her and MJ missed Gwen alot as shown in the five part comic "Spider-Man: Blue".

For this cover 'Ghost Gwen' started as a 'ghost' in a sense of memory for this MJ looking upon Plumptacular Gwen Stacy however when working on the cover the combination of the bombastic tones of the Golden comics my imagination taking hold and popping out ideas made 'Ghost Gwen' a character in herself and expressive in her personality considered, crafted, and displayed in her ghost body language and words.

When looking for designs for possible Plump/Plus size clubwear for Gwen I wanted for living Gwen to look great, sexy, and showcase her curvy figure.
For Ghost Gwen I wanted her to not have that same common look and same fashion of 616 Gwen at the point of death that many artist draw so many times and that version is known in but I did wanted her to have a special coat and surreal matching outfit. Many artists have drawn Gwen and some have given their Gwens a different fashion and style to them but one Gwen style/appearance and fashion that caught my attention when I saw her and felt old fashion 60s yet fitting for the ghost I wanted was actually from Gwen's initial designer and artist Steve Ditko and early days from John Romita Sr. before Romita began to alter her appearance to mimic more of MJ. This Gwen I found to me had her own flair in appearance and looked like a version of Gwen yet different from many other Gwens.
I found the design of a teen 60's fashion Party wear Gwen and wanted to use that design and incorporated a tale and personality around that and other ideas.

A Ghost Gwen origin/short tale and bio:

When looking into details and rereading over the issues in case I might of miss some info I mostly found that the Gwen that died was missed but a mystery to who she was for the earth. So since I didn't find much on the Gwen version that died in the story and to who she was left that door open and my mind fill in ideas. Taking into account the open possibilities of what the Multiverse can bring about I figured having her be not a copy of the 616 version in some areas could be possible as long as the basics was covered (a good friend of MJ and that Gwen 'died') and combo a few Gwens that has been made and some ideas in my head to make her still different from other Gwens in the Multiverse.

So I came up that this MJ and Gwen knew each other very well and was best friends.

Gwen and MJ were like peanut butter and jelly or yin/yang that the two were opposites yet and a fitting set. MJ was the party outgoing gal who didn't take life seriously while Gwen was the introverted science nerd who was withdrawn in life and was serous in her studies and personality figuring she could party later in her life. Both went shopping together and MJ tried to make Gwen blossom into a free spirited gal that was suffocating inside Gwen and pushed Gwen on the spot in attempts to have her be more open and expressive. Gwen love being with Peter and MJ (in fact while it was known that she loved Peter everybody in her circle didn't know she also felt strongly about MJ as well but feared losing MJ if that secret came out).

MJ finally got Gwen to agree to go to a party and have some groovy fun for once and live life. Thanks to some pushing from MJ the two went to the spa for some costly yet enriching treatments and MJ personalty gave Gwen a makeover transforming her from science awkward looking nerd to retro hip bombshell (but still awkward withdrawn Gwen inside). Only thing missing was the right outfit. While MJ took off to ensure the clubs she was planing and booked to hit with Gwen were confirmed and handle last minute planning Gwen went out to the shops by herself.

While shopping for the upcoming party not having a suitable dress and total outfit for the event Gwen went to many discount stores and brought many sale racked dresses. Gwen went back to her place that she shared with MJ and looked over everything she got with displeasure. Nothing worked and felt right for her. Alone and a few minutes away from the party and club scene MJ wanted to 'rock the night away' with her Gwen was considering canceling and just curl up with a book in her bed. But to do so would disappoint MJ and Gwen couldn't do that.

Gwen re-looked over what was in her bags and organized them for possible considerations when from one bag a coat appeared that Gwen never saw before and knew she didn't buy. Confused to how it was there Gwen pulled it out and looking it over. Gwen thought it was a strange yet surreal looking coat. It perplexed Gwen just looking at the coat for while it was weird it had something to it that was wild, groovy, exotic, and most of all a mind bending vibe and pattern that she liked and was bewitched by. It didn't look like her size or that it would suit her but when placing it on a shock and power was felt within her soul that Gwen didn't know what to compare it to. Seeing herself in the mirror and spinning around in it the coat not only looked very good on her but felt good against her. It felt right and just for her. Like the coat sort her out and it was meant to be for her alone.

Finding a stunning dress to wear under and complement the coat was a no-go so Gwen went for a plain basic dress and hoped that the coat itself would help her gain good reviews and comments from others (particularly MJ and later Peter when she would shown them).

But that fun night on the town with MJ wouldn't come to pass for Gwen. For on that night destiny had other plans for the unsuspecting Gwen. As soon as Gwen was midway to her destination power walking down a dark alley in hopes that MJ wasn't going to be upset for her being late a evil laugh came from behind her. It happened so fast and sudden for her. She turned her head and in a flash: A Goblin, a bridge, Spider-man, falling and then ... "SNAP"!

Now a Gwen dying is a common factor in the Multiverse to the point in the past it has been a long term institutionalization mindframe towards any Gwen Stacy that has existed (till Spider-Gwen caused a rift in that for some readers and fans) and a linked tale of tragedy to Gwen Stacys. Normally however that is where the tale of a Gwen and many others ends. But not this time. For this Gwen it was a massive impaction and super powers transformation moment of her 'origin' story.
When the instant when Gwen 'died' Gwen's body disappeared (not even Spider-man knew why she just vanished or what happened when he tried to save her with his web with the web catching her and only the sound of a snap then Gwen gone).
Gwen found herself first mentally disoriented for a moment and felt different. Awakened she found herself floating and shockingly see thru and full of sparkles and light (with her coat shining the most).
Tons of images and emotions raced to her but Gwen focused herself to look within herself and stay in control and leveled minded.

Freighted she soon saw many things that troubled her and confirmed what she didn't want to believe. Trying to go to a safe feeling location Gwen ran (but mostly flying) to her apartment and phased right into her door when she reached for the knob. She soon saw Peter and MJ enter her place and she called out to them but they didn't respond. She saw them grieving and in great pain. She deny why and followed them. She was with them as they made preparations for a death, many calls to people Gwen knew, and finally Gwen herself couldn't deny anymore her situation when she was at her own wake held at her place.

Scared, angry, enraged not just for being dead but all the things she wished she said to the ones she loved. All the things she push back because before "she had time for it later". All the wasted time and millions of hours that she could of lived a life and be with others who she not watched grieving her and talking about her so. All the parties and life to experience that MJ wanted to give her and she squandered. Life was truly to short to miss out on so much she could of tasted and experienced. If life was a fleeting party Gwen forfeited it while living.
She knew now that while living the pleasures, fun, wild nights, and joys were open to her and pushing things back and taking life to seriously with no 'life' experienced was so ignoramus.

Gwen's death affected MJ and for her the party ended and life was too short and she had to mature. However ironically for Gwen her own 'death' had the opposite effect with Gwen believing life was too short not to have fun and live it up while you can.

Gwen was still a scientist and a nerd by heart and when faced with questions she went out to discover and test answers and perform experiments. First question and note she had as a 'ghost' was if their was a afterlife why wasn't she there? The abilities as a Ghost and what she could discover. Flying as well as having a Ghost form and tail. Also the matter no matter what she could losing the coat but never could remove the coat on her spirit body now seemly apart of her. Her coat shined and seemed to look different from the rest of her and viewing inside the coat she could see what appeared to be the universe.
One thing Gwen found very strange was the appearance of other's "astral projection" bodies. None look like Gwen. They were see thru a bit but still looked fully human but Gwen looked like she was made of a billion of lights and many more light seemly coming from within her coat to her being. With each tiny light adding to her she felt more strong and energized with the passing of time but she didn't know why.
When others died she could see them leave the body and even was able to communicate with them temporarily before they were taken in ascension in a flash of light to the great beyond. The way she looked as a 'ghost' compared to other ghosts she saw for that short time made her feel like a freak and added to the great unknown of why she was like that and what purpose was it for.

Some time had passed and her friends move on and forward in their lives. Gwen too went thru the stages of grief and hit acceptance now 'living' and going day by day in trying to discover mysteries of her situations, abilities, answers to the unknown factors.
On the side however she also felt if she went about being alive introverted and now wishing she wasn't so then Gwen now as a ghost she would be different now in death. Speaking and acting up and commenting and joking about everything plus speaking her mind and feelings without reserve. Trying to have so much fun in any way possible that she didn't do while alive building a more expressive, confident, lusty, and very extroverted wild personality. Becoming more a jester and a tease in her comments and actions that since nobody could hear or see her she felt no restrictions feeling free to entertain herself and go all out. Drawing pleasure from her own ludicrousness and wild side now unchained.

She discovered how she viewed herself and acted seemed to altered her appearance and fashion (but the coat remained a constant part of her).

Following her friends around and viewing them much like a tv show she discover Peter was Spider-Man. Spending time on his adventures help her get over that shock and she remained by their sided during all of their adventures, saw the Spider luck firsthand, got to know them in ways she didn't know while living. Plus the heroes Peter met many of them Gwen took a interest to and once in a while decided to see what adventures and tales they were getting into.
Being around these heroes she was unaware how they were affecting her. Molded by their hard endeavors and lessons greatly of all Peter's Uncle Ben's motto that Peter mentioned constantly "With great power comes great responsibility".

One hero Peter meet however unexpected affected Gwen the most. He was called Doctor Strange and one day while Gwen went to see what magical adventure the good doctor was getting into he was performing a astral projection and saw Gwen. She shocked him as she wasn't like any other ghost or human soul he had seen before. Gwen was ecstatic to meet a human who she could communicate with and possible due to his expertise help her discover the answers to her questions.

The doctor couldn't supply Gwen many answers as she seemed to be a mystery to him but vowed to help Gwen find the answers that now he too was motivated to find.
With some lessons from the doctor and by random chance Gwen tapped within her what appears to be memories (and sometimes even abilities but that was by only chance thus far) however they were not of her own but from another Gwen who had died. The doctor explained to her the Multiverse and the concepts of alternate and token selves. To Separate herself and even categorized herself from that many other Gwen's within the Multiverse she labeled herself 'Ghost Gwen'.
Ghost Gwen discovers that every time within the almost infinite Multiverse a "Gwen Stacy" or token of died a small part of that recently departed soul was copied and placed inside 'Ghost Gwen' being one of the tiny lights within and made up of her being. Ghost Gwen was apparently a well and vacuum of dead Gwen souls and their experiences. Even dead Gwens who had superpowers was now abilities hidden within her able to be taped if only Ghost Gwen knew how to do so (unfortunately she doesn't so it's all luck for her when she tries till she final discovers how perfectly when near "the end of time").

Ghost Gwen did find a way to tap into the multiverse and discovered that she could travel to any worlds that had a Gwen or has a Gwen. She discovered that she seem to have to link to the Gwen's of the Multiverse to the point where she could affect them and even temporarily take control of them. However Ghost Gwen disliked very much the ideas of mind and will control and saw first hand the evils and unethical that such manipulations can be and bring about. So she doesn't dare but once in a while for fun or to the Multiverse Gwens benefit she might 'nudge' them a bit.

While she found entertainment in surfing the Multiverse (she really enjoyed the Earth classified as '616') she always came back 'home' (to her earth) where her MJ and Peter was and would she wish so much to be able to do just to simple of joys with again (like talking or eating a banana split with). Still as 'life' went on she smiled and jest and teased with it all. Then as luck would happen a certain "Plumptacular Spider-Gwen" popped up and Ghost Gwen became very interested in her stories and potential.

The next big moment for her future and her own growing 'cast' was when she met the embodiment of Death herself. But that is for another time.

Many mysteries and abilities for Ghost Gwen would come to light. Some that even shocking and terrifying her with the burden of the great powers and responsibilities that will be in her future. Unknowing to her but she was transforming and entering in time the classification of Deity and would be among the ranks of Death, Existence, Galactus, 'Molecule Man', Chaos, and Order. Becoming the new embodiment of Life when it comes to pass.

She would learn that the special coat she wears and is apart and slowly fusing as a part of her soul is what caused her powers and all things that makes her "Ghost Gwen" and shapes her future. A special coat that seeks out within the vast Multiverse for the one soul of them all that can be one worthy and made for it. Any other who tries to wear it and is unworthy and not destined for the coat would be punished by the coat. But when the one who places the coat on is worthy for it the coat will bond and become one with that soul. The coat can appear in any form or fashion but meant for just one.
When the soul wearing the coat dies the coat activates it primary functions and instantly transforms the wearer having the soul unable to go to heaven but remain within the realms of the living and in-between. The wearer doesn't know but is undergoing a extremely long (to the point of almost infinity) transmogrification process to transcendence and immanence to fulfill a role in the long coming unknown future.

In this case the embodiment of Life. Life and death are partners and at the end of all things from the great incursions the two that will be the only two left will be Gwen and Death. Life would take her leave to heaven and Gwen will be given a choice.
Go with Death together to heaven (where Death will have a eternal retirement) and turn off the lights of life and existence on that plains forever or Gwen chooses to be Death's partner and the new embodiment of Life causing a massive rebirth in the Multiverse. 'Ghost Gwen' as the new embodiment of Life sheds the coat made of her being and it travels the almost infinite universes once again for a new fated bearer and Deity apprentice. Ghost Gwen came to call it her "Psychedelic Coat".

However at this time frame Ghost Gwen doesn't know any of this (and when she does she first freaks out terrified of the power and responsibly but taking Peter/Ben manta to heart she eventually accepts her role in the grand scheme of things as it is necessary for all). Ghost Gwen technically has omni-level cosmos goddess level powers or (at least will gain them in time) but she would easily toss it away just for the chance to have one hour with MJ and Peter at an ice parlor.

Now a Gwen dying is a common factor in the Multiverse to the point in the past it has been a long term institutionalization mindframe towards any Gwen Stacy that has existed (till Spider-Gwen caused a rift in that for some readers and fans) and a linked tale of tragedy to Gwen Stacys. Normally however that is where the tale of a Gwen and many others ends. But not this time. For this Gwen it was a massive impaction and super powers transformation moment of her 'origin' story.
When the instant when Gwen 'died' Gwen's body disappeared (not even Spider-man knew why she just vanished or what happened when he tried to save her with his web with the web catching her and only the sound of a snap then Gwen gone).
Gwen found herself first mentally disoriented for a moment and felt different. Awakened she found herself floating and shockingly see thru and full of sparkles and light (with her coat shining the most).
Tons of images and emotions raced to her but Gwen focused herself to look within herself and stay in control and leveled minded.

Freighted she soon saw many things that troubled her and confirmed what she didn't want to believe. Trying to go to a safe feeling location Gwen ran (but mostly flying) to her apartment and phased right into her door when she reached for the knob. She soon saw Peter and MJ enter her place and she called out to them but they didn't respond. She saw them grieving and in great pain. She deny why and followed them. She was with them as they made preparations for a death, many calls to people Gwen knew, and finally Gwen herself couldn't deny anymore her situation when she was at her own wake held at her place.

Scared, angry, enraged not just for being dead but all the things she wished she said to the ones she loved. All the things she push back because before "she had time for it later". All the wasted time and millions of hours that she could of lived a life and be with others who she not watched grieving her and talking about her so. All the parties and life to experience that MJ wanted to give her and she squandered. Life was truly to short to miss out on so much she could of tasted and experienced. If life was a fleeting party Gwen forfeited it while living.
She knew now that while living the pleasures, fun, wild nights, and joys were open to her and pushing things back and taking life to seriously with no 'life' experienced was so ignoramus.

Gwen's death affected MJ and for her the party ended and life was too short and she had to mature. However ironically for Gwen her own 'death' had the opposite effect with Gwen believing life was too short not to have fun and live it up while you can.

Gwen was still a scientist and a nerd by heart and when faced with questions she went out to discover and test answers and perform experiments. First question and note she had as a 'ghost' was if their was a afterlife why wasn't she there? The abilities as a Ghost and what she could discover. Flying as well as having a Ghost form and tail. Also the matter no matter what she could losing the coat but never could remove the coat on her spirit body now seemly apart of her. Her coat shined and seemed to look different from the rest of her and viewing inside the coat she could see what appeared to be the universe.
One thing Gwen found very strange was the appearance of other's "astral projection" bodies. None look like Gwen. They were see thru a bit but still looked fully human but Gwen looked like she was made of a billion of lights and many more light seemly coming from within her coat to her being. With each tiny light adding to her she felt more strong and energized with the passing of time but she didn't know why.
When others died she could see them leave the body and even was able to communicate with them temporarily before they were taken in ascension in a flash of light to the great beyond. The way she looked as a 'ghost' compared to other ghosts she saw for that short time made her feel like a freak and added to the great unknown of why she was like that and what purpose was it for.

Some time had passed and her friends move on and forward in their lives. Gwen too went thru the stages of grief and hit acceptance now 'living' and going day by day in trying to discover mysteries of her situations, abilities, answers to the unknown factors.
On the side however she also felt if she went about being alive introverted and now wishing she wasn't so then Gwen now as a ghost she would be different now in death. Speaking and acting up and commenting and joking about everything plus speaking her mind and feelings without reserve. Trying to have so much fun in any way possible that she didn't do while alive building a more expressive, confident, lusty, and very extroverted wild personality. Becoming more a jester and a tease in her comments and actions that since nobody could hear or see her she felt no restrictions feeling free to entertain herself and go all out. Drawing pleasure from her own ludicrousness and wild side now unchained.

She discovered how she viewed herself and acted seemed to altered her appearance and fashion (but the coat remained a constant part of her).

Following her friends around and viewing them much like a tv show she discover Peter was Spider-Man. Spending time on his adventures help her get over that shock and she remained by their sided during all of their adventures, saw the Spider luck firsthand, got to know them in ways she didn't know while living. Plus the heroes Peter met many of them Gwen took a interest to and once in a while decided to see what adventures and tales they were getting into.
Being around these heroes she was unaware how they were affecting her. Molded by their hard endeavors and lessons greatly of all Peter's Uncle Ben's motto that Peter mentioned constantly "With great power comes great responsibility".

One hero Peter meet however unexpected affected Gwen the most. He was called Doctor Strange and one day while Gwen went to see what magical adventure the good doctor was getting into he was performing a astral projection and saw Gwen. She shocked him as she wasn't like any other ghost or human soul he had seen before. Gwen was ecstatic to meet a human who she could communicate with and possible due to his expertise help her discover the answers to her questions.

The doctor couldn't supply Gwen many answers as she seemed to be a mystery to him but vowed to help Gwen find the answers that now he too was motivated to find.
With some lessons from the doctor and by random chance Gwen tapped within her what appears to be memories (and sometimes even abilities but that was by only chance thus far) however they were not of her own but from another Gwen who had died. The doctor explained to her the Multiverse and the concepts of alternate and token selves. To Separate herself and even categorized herself from that many other Gwen's within the Multiverse she labeled herself 'Ghost Gwen'.
Ghost Gwen discovers that every time within the almost infinite Multiverse a "Gwen Stacy" or token of died a small part of that recently departed soul was copied and placed inside 'Ghost Gwen' being one of the tiny lights within and made up of her being. Ghost Gwen was apparently a well and vacuum of dead Gwen souls and their experiences. Even dead Gwens who had superpowers was now abilities hidden within her able to be taped if only Ghost Gwen knew how to do so (unfortunately she doesn't so it's all luck for her when she tries till she final discovers how perfectly when near "the end of time").

Ghost Gwen did find a way to tap into the multiverse and discovered that she could travel to any worlds that had a Gwen or has a Gwen. She discovered that she seem to have to link to the Gwen's of the Multiverse to the point where she could affect them and even temporarily take control of them. However Ghost Gwen disliked very much the ideas of mind and will control and saw first hand the evils and unethical that such manipulations can be and bring about. So she doesn't dare but once in a while for fun or to the Multiverse Gwens benefit she might 'nudge' them a bit.

While she found entertainment in surfing the Multiverse (she really enjoyed the Earth classified as '616') she always came back 'home' (to her earth) where her MJ and Peter was and would she wish so much to be able to do just to simple of joys with again (like talking or eating a banana split with). Still as 'life' went on she smiled and jest and teased with it all. Then as luck would happen a certain "Plumptacular Spider-Gwen" popped up and Ghost Gwen became very interested in her stories and potential.

The next big moment for her future and her own growing 'cast' was when she met the embodiment of Death herself. But that is for another time.

Many mysteries and abilities for Ghost Gwen would come to light. Some that even shocking and terrifying her with the burden of the great powers and responsibilities that will be in her future. Unknowing to her but she was transforming and entering in time the classification of Deity and would be among the ranks of Death, Existence, Galactus, 'Molecule Man', Chaos, and Order. Becoming the new embodiment of Life when it comes to pass.

She would learn that the special coat she wears and is apart and slowly fusing as a part of her soul is what caused her powers and all things that makes her "Ghost Gwen" and shapes her future. A special coat that seeks out within the vast Multiverse for the one soul of them all that can be one worthy and made for it. Any other who tries to wear it and is unworthy and not destined for the coat would be punished by the coat. But when the one who places the coat on is worthy for it the coat will bond and become one with that soul. The coat can appear in any form or fashion but meant for just one.
When the soul wearing the coat dies the coat activates it primary functions and instantly transforms the wearer having the soul unable to go to heaven but remain within the realms of the living and in-between. The wearer doesn't know but is undergoing a extremely long (to the point of almost infinity) transmogrification process to transcendence and immanence to fulfill a role in the long coming unknown future.

In this case the embodiment of Life. Life and death are partners and at the end of all things from the great incursions the two that will be the only two left will be Gwen and Death. Life would take her leave to heaven and Gwen will be given a choice.
Go with Death together to heaven (where Death will have a eternal retirement) and turn off the lights of life and existence on that plains forever or Gwen chooses to be Death's partner and the new embodiment of Life causing a massive rebirth in the Multiverse. 'Ghost Gwen' as the new embodiment of Life sheds the coat made of her being and it travels the almost infinite universes once again for a new fated bearer and Deity apprentice. Ghost Gwen came to call it her "Psychedelic Coat".

However at this time frame Ghost Gwen doesn't know any of this (and when she does she first freaks out terrified of the power and responsibly but taking Peter/Ben manta to heart she eventually accepts her role in the grand scheme of things as it is necessary for all). Ghost Gwen technically has omni-level cosmos goddess level powers or (at least will gain them in time) but she would easily toss it away just for the chance to have one hour with MJ and Peter at an ice parlor.
