Description
I've always liked this image, so I resized it to use on my 22" widescreen monitor. I then thought it lacked color, so I enhanced the lightsabers using Photoshop CS. Another wallpaper I made for my own personal use, but wanted to share. Hopefully some of you Star Wars fans out there will like it.May The Force Be With You...Always.

What disappoints me and is a revelation is that many artists that approach their artwork in depicting the Star Wars universe seems far and away from the approach Mr. McQuarrie conveyed. I find myself disliking many of the extended universes, the comics, and video games. I've seen The Old Republic video games and not only am I not impressed by the art, the characters all look like body builders.

P. S. -- Now that I added my own commentary on the Prequels, I'm still interested in HOW SLippe got such a good lightsaber effect on that old production painting!
It's one of my favorite Star Wars images to boot!

I have a special edition DVD set of Star Wars Episodes IV - VI that includes a bonus DVD of the complete production of the Star War saga. According to the documentary, George Lucas originally intended to have the force represented by some material object that was sacred and contained immense power. However, he later changed his mind to have the force represented by an intangible flow that is sensed throughout the cosmos. The art that you improved was one of the arts that George's art team put together as a concept for Darth Vader. In the final production, Vader doesn't look as mean as this art portrays (which is too bad because it would've been awsome). But either way, James Earl Jones did a fine job with the voice of Vader.

I don't think that concept for Vader would have worked in live action. The facemask is too distorted. There's a fineline between plausible fear-inducing and distorted to the point of absurdity in real ife.
For animation, on the other hand, it would be a kick in the pants to see a hand-drawn animated feature with that Vader design.
I'd rather see an alternate reality animated take on Star Wars featuring some of the discarded storylines and unused visual concepts myself. As long as Lucas remains a consultant and lets someone else with drive and creatively good sense take the reigns. Most of us know Empire was better because someone else with good taste and a rapport with the actors directed it. A Lucas-directed Empire Strikes Back would not have been half as good. Nowadays, Lucas is too happy with "good enough" and mediocre.
That would be better than continuing to trod on into this painfully awful Prequel business (Clone Wars to infinity -- the CG series isn't the last of this drek we're going to see) and doing more re-edits of the films.
The way that Lucas chooses to waste money and ultimately seal Star Wars' fate as bleached dry of thoughtful creativity is not good in the long run. The man just has no good ideas left and continues to build on the good will he lucked into almost forty years ago. Amazing that kids today think the prequels are good films! (Then again, they made Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber instant pop icons... Yuck.) 2/3 of the OT was definitely better in its own time and continues to holds up better now than the Prequels and their spin-offs...

I know that you obviously can't stand the prequels, but there's no way that you can compare them to godawful Justin Bieber. Give me Jar Jar and Anakin over that loser anyday.

Oh,
Anybody reasonable WILL agree with you on the awfulness of Beiber!
Besides, Disney's proven they CAN produce worse Star Wars movies than anything Lucas with his "cute" marketing genius could dream of!
Jar Jar and Anakin Christensen have shrines dedicated to them now...
Half the fanbase has moved on since The Last Jedi and there are very few people who like or care for the Sequel characters. Mary Rey Sue still has no backstory after 2 films and Poe and Finn are the definitions of tokenism.
I don't blame the actors for the bad writing and direction even if I don't quite get how anybody could think any of the new characters have "charisma." I just haven't seen it!
That was a problem in Rogue One, as well, and that was by far the best SW film Disney's produced. There just weren't any likeable characters in that film aside from the robot...

Justin Bieber is pure CANCER and the absolute WORST celebrity ever. I personally think that ANYBODY is better than him. Apart from god-awful Donald Trump, who is pretty much on the same level as him. In fact, I'd much rather watch the prequels than contend with his cringeworthy garbage.

I always loved the original concept art. Thanks for putting it up there and resizing it!
