This is Chakra, my beautiful rainbow boa. This is her at only 8 weeks old when I got her. No one wanted her because the tip of her tail has a little kink in it, but look at that face! I just had to have her! She is such a sweet-natured snake, so loveable, with an amazing personality. She loves to sit around my neck or climb up onto the top rim of my glasses when we sit at the computer together. And would you believe she gives kisses? She loves to give kisses! This is her story:
Chakra is now blind in her left eye. She retained her eye spectacles for about 6 sheds, and what I thought would be a promising trip to the vet only made it worse. It continued to get worse until infection finally settled in. She was seen by my new vet, an exotics specialist. I had a choice to make -- we could kill the entire structure of her eye in order to kill the severe infection or try ointment antibiotics which could not guarantee that the infection would not spread through her systemically and she very likely would succumb. So in order to save her life, the vet had to take her eye. She's still as sweet as the day I got her... such a little trooper considering everything she's been through. I absolutely adore her! She's my baby girl! I teast her sometimes and call her my one-eyed trouser snake!

She's beautiful... and I'm glad she was able to be saved, even if she can't see so good
Eyesight isn't what they rely on anyway, it's not as bad a human going blind

Aww sorry to her about her eye.... my snakes have retained their lenses before,,, usually come off if you rub them or use tweezers (only if u r very very very experienced) and tease them off. but atleast she is ok now

She hasn't had any problems since losing her left eye, but she has trouble shedding the skin around the little kink in the end of her tail! She's a sweetheart though!

Aw poor thing! Shes beautiful, I love rainbow boas, so gorgeous. Sounds like shes had a tough time, bless her. I have a blood python who has trouble with her eye caps too, our first vet was useless. We now have a better vet who doesn't get out his "bumper book of animals" when treating her.
Hope shes all recovered!

Beautiful snake!
My husband's terrifed of them, so I can't have any. :\
Nice to see someone else who takes in rescues; though mine have only been birds and rodents, it's the same no matter which species you take.
I've had several unwanted pets due to "flaws" like feather picking, missing toes, misaligned beaks (that poor bird, the plucked, missing toes, misaligned beak one was given up because his owners thought he was 'ugly'), biting when hit (gee, imagine that), starved nearly to death (one of my leopard geckos) and other physical problems.
They're just as good as a 'perfect' pet. It's a pity most owners can't see past the physical.
Your boa is gorgeous.

She is a sweetheart! How big do you think she might get now after she's had an injury?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
SilverCoils In reply to queencobra [2005-01-18 07:11:44 +0000 UTC]
I don't believe that her injury with stunt her growth any at all... as long as she retains a regular and healthy feeding habit, I think she'll grow normally! Maybe if she had had a spinal injury or an injury directly involving the skeletal/muscular system, she might not grow very quickly. But since she mainly had an epidermal problem, it really shouldn't affect her. So you can probably expect a big, fat rainbow boa in a couple a' years!

I can't wait! I love her to death! I got her from a breeder in OK and she came next day mail. I opened up the box, took the lid off her container, held out my hand and she crawled right up into the palm of my hand and just sat there with her tongue sticking out! It was the most precious thing I had seen in a long time! Thanks for the advice. Can't help but worry here and there when you're a mommy!
