You seem to have edited the hair quite a bit and detailled it right away, interesting.

What I did was go through it in layers, adding full detail to each layer as I went. Once I realized how I was going to go about it, that is. So the braid area first, because you can't really see any of the hair it's sitting on top of. Then the hair that's mostly going downward, as well as the ones flying out to the side that don't overlap anything. Then finally the strands on top.
And I definitely edited it a lot. There was no face here, so I had to make sure the hair was just how I was wanting it.

Ah, I think maybe you were looking at the first version I did of the hair, as well. That's the one in the initial 8 or 9 frames, before I make it brown and really go in and make it. The first version was just like I do when I make a thumbnail... very rough and just the basic colors and values that I want, just so I can see composition first.
The hair was actually the very last thing I painted. Other than the finishing touches of light and color adjustments, etc. I was procrastinating on it because I wanted it to be just right and was scured.
