I really like this one; its color and subtle lighting is great. I think it could use a little boost in saturation though?...

thanks. glad you like.
i know what you mean about the saturation - but unfortunatly the LED on the pedal looked bad, so i had to tone it down some.

By the way are the Big Muff & DOD part of your rig? What amps/guitars/effects are do you use?

sm In reply to Surfer-Rosa [2004-12-11 01:10:22 +0000 UTC]
you will regret asking that question;
guitars:
Fender Stratocaster 1976 USA
Tanglewood Electro-Acoustic
amps:
Vox Pathfinder w/ Tremolo
Peavey Tube something or other
effects:
Electro Harmonix Big Muff USA
Marshall Shredmaster Distortion
DOD FX69 Grunge Overdrive
DOD 280 Compressor
Ibanez SD-9 Distortion
Ibanez DL-4 Delay
Ibanez PM-7 Phase Modulator
Morley Pro Series II Wah
Tokai TCH-1 Chorus
Boss HM-2 Distortion
( it's all cheap crap really )
what do you have?

Woah, that's a load of effects. My setup is pretty empty actually.
Guitars:
- Squier Telecaster Custom
- Home-made Blueburst F-Hole ( [link] : A photo. We made it last year sometime, having found it without any strings, with a horrible chipped black plaint job on it, and only one pot still on there. The Wiring was totally screwed as well. We replaced all the wiring and pots, put on new strings, messed around with the intonation to try and get it right, and gave it it's Blueburst Paintjob. Plays a treat now )
Amps:
- Mesa-Boogie F-50
- Some Marshall 20 watt from the eighties which I picked up at a market a while back. Whenever Matt is over, he'll plug a bass into it, and we'll play, but it doesn't get too much use other than that
Effects:
- Marshall Shredmaster
- Boss RV-3
I'm one of those players who prefers to have very few effects. Constantly hitting effects on and off bugs me, I just prefer to play, and not have to worry about switching effects. Probably has something to do with my terrible mulit-tasking. I'll also leave the shredmaster and rv-3 on for extended periods of time too, only changing channels now and again.
I need to get a better guitar. I want a sunburst tele...that'd be sweet.
Have you ever tried making your own effects? I made a little distortion unit last year for a Science presentation. It has an "individual" sound, let's just say that, but it isn't even half as good as the shredmaster of the F-50's distortion. Also, it has no switch, so you need to use a little switch (like the ones on a Jaguar) to turn it on. I had fun making it anyway...

you are cool i like yr blue guitar, it's like a cross between a fender starcaster and a jaguar. very lee ranaldo from sonic youth. nice.
yr fx must sound very jonny greenwood (radiohead) - do you have the RV-3 as a delay or a reverb?
i'm thinking of getting a squire telecaster custom. the black one? w/ nice scratch plate? i might just get the fender.
homebrew fx are pretty nice. i have only ever built a bypass/power box and line booster - but i made a reverb pedal out of the tank from an old amp, and a tremolo box - but it only had a hand-switch. pretty nice though.
...i was in a band with a guy, joe, who made all his own fx, like ring-modulators, and tape-delays, and even a clone of a fender blender. which was cool
to be honest, i don't tent to rely on effects all that much. i use my delay and fuzz a lot though. and the compressor just evens out the sound a bit - because my pickups are 28 years old, they need a boost.

Hahaha, thanks. I've been trying to figure out what model and make the blue guitar is for a while, but I guess I'll never know and have just decided it was probably some form of a cheap japanese copy from the 70's. The closest I came was actually Lee Ronaldo, because he uses one quite similar to mine in the "Mildred Pierce" video, the difference is the pickguard is not there, and it has a different bridge.
And I use RV-3 as a delay, using my amps's reverb instead. Yeah, Jonny Greenwood is definately one of my guitar heros. I've been thinking about getting a Digitech Whammy recently, but I talked to a staff member at my local guitar shop, and he seemed to like them, but basically said they were something of a novelty. So I might just keep saving for a Tele.
Yeah, I'd like to build more effects in the future. My Dad once made his own Wah-Wah, using a discarded Wah box.
And Joe sounds incredible. Before I found my Shredmaster I had considered making my own from schematics found on the Internet. But I managed to find a Shredmaster, and cheap too: $100 Australian (not sure how much the is in GBP)
And yes, that is my Squier, that bears a resemblance to a '72 Telecaster Custom. Although I must say, it gets a tad noisy sometimes, that's my only complaint.
Man, I'd kill for some of your effects, especially the USA Big Muff. Nice. And where'd you pick up the sweet Vintage Fender? How much did it set you back?

the guitar is really my dad's, but i have somewhat adopted it over the last few years because i can't really play anything else.
it's worth too much both sentimentaly and monetarily to take to gigs though, so i'm either going to go for a fender jaguar or a telecaster as a spare guitar.
digitech whammy pedals are quite nice, but as you say, they are more of a novelty. i played with one for a while, but i couldn't find any real use for it. apart from simply pushing the pedal forward, turning it on and making the guitar an octave higher. (and playing "Just").
i have never been too sure about the shredmaster. it's an ok pedal. nice for slide and stuff, because you can still hear the guitar through it. my first pedal though. i think i payed about Β£35 for it, because i had a band rehersal that night, and i didn't have a pedal.

Surfer-Rosa In reply to sm [2004-12-16 07:23:09 +0000 UTC]
yeah, Teles and Jags are great, mind you, I've only actually played a Tele, I just like the way the Jag looks
but seriously, yeah, the shredmaster is an ok pedal, but I don't actually use it for that much, I usually just use it to boost my Overdrive channel (not that it really needs it, but I like it anyway) so, I'll leave the gain reasonably low, and use it for a bit of dirty on the clean channel as well. It's not really a great pedal, but it gets the job done, and that's all I ask. I only actually bought it because I'd heard some great things about it, and Radiohead's extensive use of it.
i'm going to give the whammy a try, despite reviews that can't make up their minds over them, and do the judging myself. I also hear that they sound like of...unatural. I don't know.

I love the repetition of red in the picture: shoes, pedals, some of the writing on the floor. It's great!
