This really did happen in the Legends comics that covered the first invasion of Kamino. A lot of clones were killed in the battle alongside several Jedi commanders.

Yup. Alpha was also the first clone to be given a nickname by Anakin and he was later the architect of the Clone Commander training program. He trained a new generation of Clone Commanders who had potential to be good leaders. You might recognize some of these troopers:
Cody, Bacara, Gree, Nyx, and many others.
It is later implied that Rex and the other officers that we see in the Clone Wars show were also members of this program; however, Alpha was never credited, so he's still a Legends only character right now.
