Hmmmmm lots of different opinions on this armor! Personally, I'm already a big fan of the first order's aesthetics and their armor designs so I'm already sold by this cool addition to their army! Yet the best they can muster for the SITH TROOPER is a few additions, indention, and a simple color swap to their basic trooper armor?!
Come on! It's not like they don't already have a design that they could recycle.

We've heard all of this before when Disney was selling us the introduction of the basic First Order troopers. Lets not beat around the bush about this. The only thing that's been changed is a few minor details and a new layer of paint. Anyone who can use a search engine will realize that Sith troopers have already been done with MUCH more interesting and unique designs compared to their counterparts.
I can't be excited about your new trooper if you insist on pitching it to me like trying to pass a repainted Volkswagen as a new model of Mercedes. They're being lazy and they're up-selling it.

They're not trying to sell them as that at all. You're reading way too much into what was only advertized as a new type of trooper like the Death and Shore troopers in Rogue One or the Range troopers in Solo.

The root of my irritation is the lack of imagination put into the design of the sith trooper when a much more unique design (cannon) already exists. There was obviously very little thought put into this armor, and it makes the look of these higher skilled and ranked troopers almost meme-able when compared to the basic troopers.

It's still a gorgeous design. The visor and mouth shape are much more geometrical than the standard stormtrooper and they use more specialized equipment. It also works thematically since Palpatine is coming back as the color scheme is reminiscent of the Imperial Guards and he will more than likely try to restore the rule of the Sith, so the name and appearance make perfect sense, as I'm sure the designers would explain it to you if you expressed your criticism to them instead of complaining on a freaking fanart.
There IS no other Sith Trooper armor design in the new canon. starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Sith_… The KOTOR Sith Trooper (the one I assume you're referring to) is a stupid design strategically speaking. A huge visor like that is just asking to get a blaster bolt in the head.

No, I'm referring to the Imperial trooper starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Imper…, also called a Sith trooper, which was featured in the Old Republic several times. There is also the Sith trooper from the New Sith Wars, starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Sith_… , which is a unique armor design that would fit the post Empire era.
The First Order Sith trooper design is a red first order grunt trooper with some minor detail difference, unlike the Imperial Guard which looked like an entirely different from other troops at Palatines disposal. If you like this Sith trooper, then more power to you. I just wish they would have been more creative with their design. I'm just commenting with my own take on the new trooper as is relevant on this page.

A lot of people seem to be confused about the name since the Sith are essentially gone post-ROTJ, but considering Palpatine is coming back, I think the name makes total sense.
My little theory is that Palpatine has been working behind the scenes all throughout the Sequel era and before, using Snoke as a puppet to both ruin the legacy of the Skywalkers as revenge for his death and destroy the New Republic. Now, Sidious is trying to reinstate the galactic rule he had spent years of his life plotting for and enforcing, but was cut short by his apprentice's betrayal, hence why they are named "Sith Troopers".
As for how he survived... "The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural."
