Wow, the colors and contrast in this photo are really nice. The colors are really warm.
Focus is pretty good, I know how hard it can be to get such a thing in perfect focus.
I also like the 'cross'/'X' you created. In the thumbnail it really looked like a piece of a chessboard, well done.
The lighting looks very good too. The shadow adds a little extra to the photo.
Love the fact that you didn't center the 'king', specially cause the shadow might not have been in the photo completely if you would've.

Nice job

I see the grain ur talking about. MAYBE its cause u used auto focus and the camera wasnt focus on the chess peice? the shadow is sweet though.

yeah, i agree. Auto focus doesent work well on a lot of occasions, using manual focus is more precise.
i would also suggest getting some work-lamps, although i use a standard 100W frosted and have longer exposures.

i have a nikon 8700, which sadly lacks the manual focus ring i really do need some better lighting, thanks for the tips!

you don't need a ring focus to use manual focus, any camera above point and shoot has a Manual focus feature...they are usually slow...but worth it. Read your manual to find out which hand contorting series of buttons activates this feature.
