Description
The Dune Folk are a species of alien that inhabits the World alongside humankind. Their physiology greatly diverges from terrestrial vertebrates and their underlying biochemistry is similarly alien. Despite this, they exhibit a mentality remarkably similar to human beings and they are one of humanity's staunch allies.A typical male of the species, would only stand about 1.3 meters tall, hence why humans often refer to them as dwarves, or the 'short ones.' Physiological quirks of note include two long, flexible slits along the neck that serves both as the primary airway and the source of vocalizations. The dune folk can communicate in stereo, being able to overlay two distinct sounds simultaneously. The eyes are mounted in flexible turrets that can move freely after the fashion of terrestrial chameleons. His jaw is divided into four segments. The vertical-aligned segments are largely used for chewing and tearing at food, whereas the horizontal pair act to convey food into the mouth. The inner surface of the horizontal jaws is densely packed with chemoreceptive cells that are used both for smelling and tasting their environment.
The Dune Folk is considered an octopod, but only really uses three of its four pairs of limbs for day-to-day activities. The rear two pairs are designed for locomotion, and the second pair of limbs are used for fine manipulation of tools, as shown by this individual wielding his walking stick. The primary pair of limbs are heavily reduced and serve primarily to facilitate reproduction. The male's gonapods are designed to handle and convey his sperm packet to the female. The female's gonapods are larger and wider than the males and are used to carry around their ootheca (i.e., egg sac) and infant conspecifics.
