Description An idea I had of Queen Chrysalis actually being good in the beginning before being corrupted and transformed into what she is now.

Behold as the Changeling Queen uses her Changeling Powers to transform into....a Changeling Queen!

Fantastic work here ^^ For starters, I love how you drew canon form Chrissy here. You did a beautiful job on her alluring eyes, and I also love how you drew her unkept; beautiful mane Apart from that, gorgeous work on all of her other features

While I prefer her canon form, I LOVE how you designed her alternate form as well. Very clever hairstyle you've given her, both for her mane and her tail I also love the alternate designs you've given to her wings and horn, too

Quite a nice design, though I rather hope the transformation goes from the right sight to the left Chrissie is the most beautiful the way She is and I'd never want Her divine appearance to change. Anyway, very nice work with both Chrissies. I especially enjoy the look of their fabulous eyes that remain unchanged - always perfect and mesmerizing.

If I was to guess, based on her alternate...

...I would guess this was what Queen Chrysalis looked like more then 1000 years ago when Celestia and Luna were just kids.

Back when Chrysalis was a Flutter Pony.

Chrysalis as a Flutter Pony, hah. ^^ Yeah, I like thinking that my Queen is an ancient being, aged quite similarly to Royal Sisters - though definitely I rather believe that Chrysalis would be younger than Luna or Celestia.

She's definitely not younger then Luna.

And if the hints they gave us are right about Celestia real origin, Chrysalis would still be at least 10 years older then Celestia.

They've already officially shown in the DHX and IDW approved stories that alternate Chrysalis is a not a changeling, but something pure.  A guardian of love, valleys, and roses.

In mythology, changelings are simply Fairy-folk that have become corrupted and disguised themselves as others while kidnapping them.
With her knowing stuff predating alicorn rule of Ponyville, and with some G1 stuff partially canon, Chrysalis is most likely Queen Rosedust herself.

Well... It would make everything clearer about Luna, Celestia and my beloved Queen's origins... but I don't see the IDW comic as canon. I'm only basing on the show - and the cartoon does not reveal any of those things.

And... oh my... As much as I dislike the alternate look for Chrysalis from the IDW comics... She looks so beautiful and peaceful on that second picture you've given a link to. I actually started to like that design a little more. Though I still prefer my dearest Queen in Her original and oh-so perfect form.

That might have been what she looked like 1000 years ago. A bit younger albeit, but on the other hand I doubt we would recognize Celestia and Luna before they became an alicorn. They revealed the name of the book that revealed how Celestia and Luna came to be Alicorns and that was....equally startling 0.0

Btw, the storylines in the comics are created while working together with the DHX team. In other words, while the specific dialogue is written by IDW, the outline and designs are officially from DHX since they want IDW to create good comics that can do stuff the show can't and don't have the same stories as the episodes. In other words, the design of uncorrupted Chysalis is canon until made otherwise. They say that themselves.

And to be fair, the cartoon does not reveal almost ANYTHING about Celestia and Luna's casual personalities, so any attempt to put a personality on them based on the show is a dead end :/ As most fans pointed out, its rather disappointing, but they keep their char. development at arms length so Celestia can lazily be used as Author's Word of God.

Beautiful wise fairy Queen Chysalis has a certain appeal just like gorgeous changeling Queen Chrysalis doesn't she? They made a cool design for alternate her.

Well yes, that's my point. The things that IDW make are "quasi canon". They're actual until Hasbro decides to make something themselves. That is why I don't want to take something as canon that is out of the show. I might get used to it, and then Hasbro reveals their version making it problematic for me.
It might be silly to you, but Chrysalis is VERY important to me... the most important... and I would rather not risk getting my vision of Her ruined and torn by eventual contradictions between the IDW and Hasbro creations. Until the original show reveal something more of my dearest Queen (IF it's going to happen at all) I rather prefer some things to stay unknown and unrevealed.

Yes, the design isn't that bad... I guess it was portrayed the wrong way (first picture) and so it made me dislike it more than it truly should... That alternate Chrysalis in the first picture I'm mentioning looks like a... "warm-hearted granny" instead of looking astonishingly beautiful, seductive, subtle and divine as She was shown in the Canterlot Wedding episode.

You don't need to explain how important Chrysalis is to you man; I know 'Chrysalislover' quite well and I personally think Chrysalis is one of the most awesome fictional characters in ages. From her design, to her voice, to her persona, everything. In fact I plan to make an enormous action crossover story with her as the main antagonist.

I understand your mindset, but if its about verification, well, there in lies the problem...if Chrysalis is an ancient being similar to Celestia and Luna, DHX(on order of Hasbro) will keep any potential backstory at an arm's distance in the show or direct show related materials. The very fact she knew stuff about Canterlot when it was still run by unicorn royalty says a lot about her age and potential origins, but not everything.

Lets take Celestia and Luna and Cadence for example. Where did Celestia and Luna come from? Such a question we were hoping for answers in the later seasons right? Well Hasbro said "too bad", and had one of the show writers, Amy Keating Rogers, publish an official book "Journal of the Two Sisters" which was supposedly what Twilight found in their old castle. What did it reveal?

Bupkis.

Its less like a journal and more like scraps of a notebook. Basically it simply starts out stating that Celestia and Luna simply "existed" as teenage alicorns in Canterlot, no origins, Star Swirled tells them they are powerful and unusually long lived alicorns, doesn't establish if they can age or not, and they are made rulers and solve some politics between the ponies, the zebra's and the griffons. In the end it gives nothing. It was basically a scrapbook of old notes that told nothing important. You think they will make an exception for Chrysalis  I wish they did, she's one of my favorite characters, but its very unlikely

And about Cadence  What is her backstory besides that non-DHX-approved marketing novella made for ages 4-8? Hasbro says 'nope' and tells Amy to tweet that the children's story is correct and her backstory, ancestry or anything isn't important enough for an episode, nor anything that connecting to it.

...the point I'm trying to get across is that you can't worry too much about getting confirmation from Hasbro via DHX's show, because they WILL shy away from stories that delve too deep into important drama and events from 1000s of years ago we don't already know about. And if you prefer things to stay unrevealed, then I don't see the harm in having an multiple possibilities as your headcanon origin for her.

I don't know about 'granny'...This is how I saw it: From how they portrayed her design and power in respect to Celestia and Luna, she came across less like a granny and more like a nanny, motherly type who's still fairly young for an immortal goddess queen, not as young as her evil, sexy conqueror from our Equestria, but still fairly young. Imagine the trope of a powerful almost milf-like woman, but once she takes off her glasses and hair down to reveal she's a lot younger then some 'granny', and suddenly if she's actually made angry, her ancient power and experience is enough to bring most foes to her knees.
She supposedly kept both Alternate Celestia and alternate Luna at bay with her power in her respective area of Equestria.

While normal Chrysalis definitely applies to many tropes, most especially

tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…

I see this type of character, alternate Chrysalis  as one of those kind but intimidating older women badasses, like Unohana from Bleach as one example. Definitely a
'Beware the nice ones'-Motherly-Lady of War
tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…
tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php…

Keep in mind, this is NOT our Chrysalis. While our Chrysalis chose a path of power, ambition, beauty, cunning and sexiness, their Chrysalis seems to have chosen a path of wisdom, godesshood and worldly responsibility very similar to our Celestia. That path may not be as sexy or awesome as the path our Chrysalis took, but as we see with Celestia...

derpibooru.org/675281?scope=sc…

...that power can be freakin' badass as well.

Yeah, you've got the point. Having few possibilities could be an option but it would still make me feel torn.

I must say that the "milf-like" idea sounded quite interesting, haha.

I understand. It was only after I discovered alternate Chrysalis's appearance and saw she was older then our version, fully researched changlings and found out, and I quote,

"In Ireland, looking at a baby with envy – "over looking the baby" – was dangerous, as it endangered the baby, who was then in the fairies' power.[9]  So too was admiring or envying a woman or man dangerous, unless the person added a blessing; the able-bodied and beautiful were in particular danger. Women were especially in danger in liminal  states: being a new bride"

"In some rare cases, the very elderly of the Fairy people would be exchanged in the place of a human baby, and then the old fairy could live in comfort"

, that I realized not only was Cadence a perfect candidate for being replaced with a changeling under changeling/former fairy folk mythology and lore, in the rarest cases the elder and strongest of Changelings could change their age to do so.

Before then, I thought she and the changelings were of some similar origin to Aku from Samurai Jack with their flashes of fire, black skin, and shape-shifting. After all, Paul Rudish, a long time friend and co-worker with Lauren Faust, made some significant impacts in art development for both MLP and Samurai Jack. Still haven't completely ruled that out, but with G4 making a connection with G1 with Tirek, this flutter-pony headcanon has become my main one. (what is your headcanon for Chrysalis btw? Don't worry, I won't breath a soul if its a concept you want to keep secret, and no idea sounds too farfetched to me.)

Haha, I guess! ^^  I guess the concept of Alternate Chysalis being a Milf just popped into my head when I found out this older Chrysalis was responsible for 1/3rd of Equestria's defense. I mean she's not supremely hot like Chrysalis, but if she's incredibly powerful and even older then Celestia, then that's what springs to mind.

WinterDominus In reply to cronomatt [2014-07-28 21:32:15 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I saw the similarities with Aku.

Well, my headcanon is completely unjustified, full of gaps and made to see Chrysalis as a being capable of loving. Most probably everything below you will find as bullcrap.

I like thinking that She was an Alicorn who in young ages was cast down to the Changeling hive. She was being tormented there and drained of love She was filled with before the event - an initiation for making Chrysalis their Queen. In my thoughts Changelings drain magical powers to survive while Chrysalis' special ability is to gain power from love. That's what the Changelings felt when they found Her in their hive.
Holes in legs and mane - an effect of draining too much of Her magical power without letting Chrysalis gain more from love. Viper eyes - adaptation to constant darkness in the Changeling caves. Crooked horn - it was constantly being broken to prevent Chrysalis protecting Herself from the Changelings before She accepted Her fate. Fly-alike wings - an effect of both disabling Her flying ability (feathers being thorn away) and final ritual that made Her more of a Changeling than an Alicorn which also covered Her back and midsection with chitinous armor and gave Her the power to shapeshift.
Spending long decades and growing with the Changelings made Chrysalis learn their rules and Her responsibilities. She forgot the meaning of love, tenderness, etc. and became evil. To prevent the situation of being drained by the Changelings to Her death, Chrysalis had to conquer love to gain power - food for Her subjects. And so She was doing so for another decades but the hive was constantly starving. Chrysalis decided to find a source of great love (power) so She wouldn't have to keep struggling. And so She found Equestria and from there on the story is known to you.

And that's about it I guess.

Heh, apparently were not the only ones. XD

derpibooru.org/675292?scope=sc…

I've been giving your concept some thought....In my opinion, that headcanon actually isn't as farfetched as you may think. In fact, if you think about a very small detail, it sets up Chrysalis as a character very similar to Sunset in the way she was sort of 'replaced'. But instead of Twilight, its Cadense. Its a very small, alicorn detail....

....The original Crystal Princess from 1000 years ago. The only reason that Cadence was made princess of the Crystal Empire was because she looked identical to the Crystal Princess according to the onlookers. "Behold, the Crystal Princess!"

Lets push the Flutter Ponies aside for just a second and talk about your theory. Some have speculated that there was a love based Alicorn that resembled Cadence from 1000 years ago. The Crystal Princess was forced to use the Crystal Heart to keep Sombra at bay, but eventually Sombra took over and sealed away the Crystal Heart, leaving the fate of the fate of the Crystal Princess unknown. Celestia and Luna defeated Sombra, but not before he cursed the empire. However, the original leader of the Crystal Empire before Sombra remains a mystery. Heck, Sombra's existence as an immortal unicorn is also a mystery. In the alternate world, it almost seemed like Alt-Luna and Alt-Sombra used to be....step-brother and step-sister. Was the Crystal Princess Sombra's sister, or even daughter? Who knows? The only person who discovered everything about the original alicorns was Sunset Shimmer, and the implications were staggering when we realize we might know Celestia by a different name after Tirek's reveal.

derpibooru.org/458742?scope=sc…
derpibooru.org/458744?scope=sc…

Anyway, I'm getting off track. The point is, that Crystal Heart is a symbol of the original princesses power. How incredibly fitting. A power that grows stronger with the love of others? Sounds exactly like the alicorn you explained. Is it possible that Sombra cursed Chrysalis to become a Changeling queen? That is a possible theory, and one that fits yours pretty well. In fact I believe someone created a fanfic that's very similar to my interpretation of your concept, with a few details different

derpibooru.org/659285?scope=sc…

Back to my theory on Chrysalis being Rosedust, I fail to see how her simply being the Queen of Flutter Ponies instead of an Alicorn drastically changes your idea of her.

She would still be a leader of a neutral but peace-loving race, thus being capable of great love, and be incredibly powerful as either a Queen Flutterpony or an Alicorn. Rosedust was the one who lead the FlutterPonies to weaken the Smooze, a concoction so vile not even the Rainbow of Light could destroy it alone. But what if in G4's version of G1's history, things did not become so victorious without a sacrifice. What if Rosedust and many of the of the Flutter ponies had to sacrifice themselves in weakening the Smooze, it corrupted her Flutter Pony body, making her far more insect like and draining her of her love. Just a splash of Smooze stuck on a pegasi, earth pony or unicorn was enough for them to act completely discorded, completely drained of hope or merry or love. What would happen to a magical creature like a Flutterpony? Nothing good.

In fact maybe the only difference between Chrysalis and alt-Chrysalis is that Chrysalis believed with her new, corrupted, insect form, she could no longer be loved again, and she became a changeling queen through and through. Holes, corruption, the whole deal. She is still capable of love, but it is buried under more then a 1000 years of bitter hatred and true maliciousness. The same idea could be said if Sombra's curse did something similar, if we consider the idea that the Chrysalis could the be the original Crystal Princess.

That's pretty much it. My two possible headcanons, one based on my idea and one based on yours.

The only thing I felt was a little bit, well, nonsense in your headcanon was your idea of how Chyrsalis transformed into a changeling. In no way did it seem that Chrysalis wasn't either the origin of the changelings or a changeling since birth. The idea that Chrysalis was given a torturous makeover by the changelings makes her seem too disconnected from the changelings themselves. At least Luna is still a victim of her own repressed hatred and immense power with no outside force. With the two explanations I came up with, while an outside force did trigger their initial transformation, it was still the power and darkness inside them that corrupted them in the long run. Being tortured to be an evil changeling from start to finish seems a little off.  It seemed obvious that she was their real queen, their alpha as it were, which is why she had more unique features and immense power.

WinterDominus In reply to cronomatt [2014-08-01 10:35:40 +0000 UTC]

Well, like I mentioned before, Chrysalis was supposed to be "changelingfied" by some sort of ritual which gave Her final features and bestowed her with the power to change shape. It was not supposed to be just tormenting. Anyway, yeah it is kinda holey headcanon of mine. I've never been developing it too much for the same reasons why I didn't read the IDW comics - I just don't want to get too attached to it.

That's a very interesting point of view on the alternate Chrysalis that actually makes me almost love Her like I do love my original Queen.

I must say, now that you've explained the Chrysalis - Rosedust headcanon more, it became even more interesting as well as the Crystal Princess one. Both seem very appealing but the idea of another connection between G1 and G4 is better and it would prove the thing I like to think of - that Chrysalis is not a young being... and She'd finally have known origins.

Can't wait for the season 5. I hope that they'd reveal who Chrysalis really is and was... though I'm kinda afraid of Her possible reappearance - there is a huge chance they'd butcher Her perfect character... so maybe it's better if She does not reappear? Maybe it will be better if Chrysalis remains a beautiful enigma? I'm vacillating between those two.
