Description
Someone mentioned to me that they "did not need to learn anatomy because they only wanted to draw semi-realistic anime style"
It made me a little bit sad to be honest, personally I have nothing against any art style and I think people should draw the way that makes them happy.
But I also feel that knowledge is power and learning the fundamentals such as anatomy, color theory, storytelling and perspective can improve any art style.
P.S. This sketch is not exactly about accurate anatomy but mostly about some landmarks I keep in mind when drawing a face.

the colors aren't there to point "which colors" you should use in said areas, but to divide the face in shapes. shapes help us draw easier as it deconstructs people, objects, etc into simpler silhouettes. in this case, the shapes are simply highlighter with color, this is done so you can see how the same shapes translate from a "realistic" style/study to smilingweapon's stylization. this video might help you understand it better!

Everything you and DadPool said before me in his comment apply to me as well, I started getting better for real only after I started learning and practicing realism. Of course I'm nowhere near to where I want to be - YET -, but I have a much better appreciation and admiration for the human body and nature as a whole now, which in turn is the basis for all great, true art imho. I almost weep in ecstasy each time I see bodies drawn by art masters such as the Renaissance ones.

Could I still improve even if my art style is basically trash?

Your art is not trash, it's cartoony-wannabe applied to animals. And yes, I really do believe anybody can improve with learning and practice. My art looked something like this 12 years ago: i.pinimg.com/236x/9f/7a/10/9f7… Now it looks way better, but not good enough because I haven't practiced daily, letting myself become mired in a bog of doubt, jealousy and procrastination. Now I'm starting again, and I'm planning to stick to art. So you can do it to, just know it takes time and learning properly. Though it takes fairly little time, ~1 year, to become decent if you practice daily, some even develop from crap to awesome during that time span.
So best of of studying if you really wanna do this, whether as a hobbyist or future professional. But remember talent is only 1%, the rest is work.

I'm really glad what I wrote could do this for someone, thanks a lot for telling me Medusa. You saying this inspired me right back, I have my own issues with keeping motivated and positive.

One of the biggest pieces of advice most artists have given me while I've been learning is to learn to draw realism first and then work on stylized after you get the basics down solid. The benefits are very pronounced if you have a good grasp of anatomy and technique before you work on stylizing your work. (Still learning)

Thankyou for illustrating this!
I agree with the anatomy giving artists of *any* kind of style a solid foundation to reference and build upon.
It's like saying a mathematician doesn't need to know his basics to do algebra. Fundamentals is key to any practice.
