Description Simplified Tactical Mapping Symbols for generic Sci-Fi or realistic wargaming settings.

Based loosely on FM 101-5-1: Operational Terms and Graphics [ [link] ] to avoid the over-complexity of current IRL examples such as a Stryker Brigade [ [link] ].

Permission is granted to use as desired, with or without crediting, as it was generated from open source material.

Basic Concepts:

~By combining a 'frame' (type) symbol and the appropriate graphic modifiers most types of unit liable to be seen on a battlefield map should be represented.

~Light and Heavy can be subjective, but most units will not require either modifier as they use a mix of equipment.

~Airborne denotes units with unpowered drop equipment.

~Airlanding denotes units with some form of powered airlift or descent module.

~Motorised units in general use unarmored or lightly armored wheeled vehicles.

~Mechanized units in general use some form of tracked vehicle.

~Engineers can be any form of combat arm, combat support, or combat service support depending on role and equipment.

~Combat Support units provide specialized fire support and operational assistance to combat elements. CS units are almost always capable of both attack and self-defense.

~Combat Service Support units provide functions and services required to man, arm, fuel, fix, move, and sustain forces in combat operations. CSS units are almost always capable of only self-defense.

~Maintenance units provide field repair, salvage operations, and ordnance reconditioning.

~Military Affairs includes bureaucratic units such as Finance, Public Affairs, Judge Advocate General, and Chaplains.

~Quartermaster units provide replenishment for all types of military supplies, logistics, water purification, housing, and food services.

Symbols not included; Specialty icons such as artillery acquisition radar (STAR and the like), EW & other Signals functions, Engineer functions, airfields, higher supply/support graphics, etc.
