Description
Organization chart for a fan-revamped look at DP9's Heavy Gear miniatures war game. Created from a real-world functionality standpoint while attempting to remain close to published canon.Heavy Gear Regiments
- A Gear regiment is somewhat lean on supporting elements, including only enough basic maintenance personnel and vehicles to keep everything running while almost always lacking any organic recovery and transportation assets. The supply units inherent to the regiment involve primarily the transportation of food/water, ordnance, and fuel. This minimal logistics tail combined with a usually small number of personnel compared to other regiments allows Gear formations to utilize the full extent of their mobility while making the unit(s) easy to transport where needed.
- Gear regiments tend to be the only 'pure' regimental type due to the legged design as their flexibility, offset by the minimal ordnance load, can make operations with other vehicle types problematical. The capability to go virtually anywhere by crossing terrain too rough for other vehicles makes Gears quite good at raiding or strike and fade operations.
- Gear brigades most often comprise a pair of regiments of similar capability, or else independent single regiments can be assigned on an as needed basis to divisions or task forces from a pooled reserve.
Squadrons (Cadres) are the basic formation of Heavy Gear regiments, and are comprised of [4 - 6] individual machines and their pilots. These squadrons are divided into two or three details;
A command detail consisting of one dedicated variant,
A core detail consisting of three machines optimized for the group's primary role,
An optional specialist detail of two machines equipped to enhance the group's mission capability.
Squadron totals;
Heavy Gears: 6 maximum, 4 minimum.
Pilots: 4 to 6
Sections are often considered the smallest formation of Gears capable of waging effective general warfare due to their limited loads of ordnance, and are comprised of;
[2 to 3] squadrons (cadres) with or without specialist details,
Plus a command detail of [2] Gears consisting of the section commander's and deputy commander's machines.
While each squadron may have a specialist detail organic to the section, or some other form of attachment, a command group will rarely be assigned a specialist detail from a higher level of command unless it consists of three full combat groups.
Section totals;
Heavy Gears: 20 maximum, 10 minimum.
Pilots: 10 to 20
Companies are the most common size of formation altered into a self-supporting combat team, and are comprised of;
[3] Gear sections of two to three squadrons (cadres) each,
A command group of [2] Command details, with each containing a dedicated variant for the commander or deputy commander plus a long-range communications/bodyguard variant,
An independent specialist squadron (cadre) of either [4 - 6] Gears or [3 - 6] Striders able to be assigned to each section command group, or used en masse by either company commander as required.
Unlike other regimental types, Heavy Gear formations at the company level do not include significant supply elements, only a vehicle-borne maintenance platoon of [xx] personnel and [xx] vehicles led by the senior company NCO, comprising;
[xx] mobile repair (parts) shops,
[xx] fuel carriers,
[xx] water trailers,
[xx] munitions trailers.
Company totals;
Heavy Gears: 70 maximum, 38 minimum. (or, 64 max/34 min and 3 - 6 Striders)
Support vehicles: x
Pilots: 38 - 70 (or, 34 - 64 and 6 - 12 Strider crew)
Other personnel: x (6 per vehicle)
Regiments are the highest level of command most Terra Novan troops will encounter outside of full scale conflict. In times of such general warfare a regiment itself may be altered into a very large combat team. Regiments comprise;
[3 to 5] full Gear companies,
[0 to 2] cavalry reconaissance companies,
[0 to 1] motorised or light infantry battalion,
A mixed Gear/Strider/vehicle artillery company,
A command section,
A vehicle-borne supply company.
Although Northern faction Gears are featured here, most Southern factions would use a similar structure filled out with their own particular Gear models.
