Description
I mentioned Dreadnought in the notes for Hawke’s design, so of course that means I’m posting her next! Here she is, accompanied by an all-caps Sabaton lyric for the title. Normal capitalization just didn’t feel right, y’know?Design Notes:
-She is by far the most muscular of the ships, though strength-wise she probably pales in comparison to some of the newer battleships; she’s meant to resemble a bodybuilder, meaning those muscles are ultimately more for appearances than actual feats of strength. I felt this was fitting, given her fearsome reputation and underwhelming combat record. Fun fact: I used Sakura Ogami from Danganronpa as an arm reference!
-Speaking of arms and appearances, those scars aren’t from battle; Dreadnought did little actual fighting, and the implication is that she gave them to herself just to make herself look more badass. The only real scar is the one on her cheek, which represents her ramming of SM U-29, although I don’t think she actually took any significant damage from that.
-The sleeves are ripped off her coat, also to make her look cooler. She wants to show off her arms, and she’d be the kind of person to rip off her own sleeves to do so. However, she does still wear gloves, just like Campania and Hawke.
-The edge of her coat is also supposed to be intentionally ripped; that’s not representative of battle damage either, and also serves the purpose of making her look awesome. She keeps the coat unbuttoned so she can access her guns, which are hooked directly onto her belt; if the guns went over the coat, she wouldn’t quite get that awesome billowing-cape effect.
-Her hair is short and spiky, meant to look messy and androgynous. Dreadnought isn’t the kind of person who would want to put effort into her hair, so she keeps it short for convenience’s sake.
-Those are functional torpedo nets attached to her boots. All she has to do is reach down and flip each of the strut things out, extending the nets. They are, however, pointless; proportionately, they’re too small to stop the torpedoes carried by the U-boats and destroyers, plus they don’t extend all the way to the ground and would thus be useless to stop even a small torpedo launched from, say, ankle height. Also, in what situation is she gonna need them anyway? What torpedo-wielding warship would shoot at her legs rather than her torso, which is easier to hit? I have no idea. I just added them on a whim because I thought it would be cool and funny, and it is.
Personality:
The best word to describe Dreadnought is, in her opinion, fearless, but brash would work just as well. She’s intense and battle-hungry, the type to throw herself headlong into a fight even if she’s hopelessly outnumbered, and although she was quickly rendered obsolete by the battleship revolution she herself sparked she’s still a very formidable foe - or at least, she sure thinks she is. Her confidence and impulsivity may be the death of her someday, but even if that’s the case it means she’ll go down fighting in the glorious battle she’s always yearned for.
She’d prefer to die in battle, really; that’s the case for most warships, but Dreadnought in particular is angry that she never got to see true combat and wants more than anything to show off the firepower that shook the entire world when she was first introduced back in 1906. She’s aware of her own wasted potential, and if rectifying that waste means dying in a blaze of glory then so be it.
