Description
My sister and I recently finalized our list of Cold War-era American aircraft carriers and their associated flight deck shirt colors, so here’s one of my two design contributions to the lineup: USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67)! This is only the first pass at her design, but I’m pretty pleased with her so far! I haven’t nailed down her personality yet, though. So, here are the design notes!
-John F. Kennedy is a modified version of the Kitty Hawk class, so I took some elements from my sister’s Kitty Hawk design. Specifically, Kennedy has cat ears and a tail, gray eyes and white hair, a bowtie (as seen in the alternate neckwear sketch), and planes represented by a single relevantly-named bird (in this case a bald eagle named Jackie).
-The aforementioned bowtie is partially a can opener, based on a nickname the ship got after her collision with USS Belknap . The collision was actually extremely destructive and killed 8 people (7 on Belknap and 1 on Kennedy), but because it’s such a notable part of her history I figured I should include a reference.
-I made her sort of butch in terms of fashion and hairstyle as well as generally making her look more mature. Kitty Hawk is femme and looks very childlike, so I gave her cousin a contrasting appearance.
-She has a spy-esque earpiece and microphone, fitting her role as a Cold War capital ship.
-Her saw-shaped eyebrows are another reference to her Can Opener nickname, but can openers aren’t actually saw-shaped. It just felt right.
-Her design is meant to be very monochrome: almost entirely gray and white.
-I plan to include her hull number, CV-67, in her design somewhere, but I haven’t decided where yet.
-Like Kitty Hawk, her entire complement of planes is represented by one bird. While Kitty Hawk has Wright the hawk, Kennedy has Jackie the bald eagle. Originally, I planned for Jackie to be a robot or drone, but eventually I decided on an actual bird instead.
-The four buttons on her suit jacket are another tie-in to Kitty Hawk’s design. Originally there were five of them, but I erased one so the two could match.
