Description

YOU CANNOT ESCAPE YOUR PAST.
you must be mistaken, i-
YOU CANNOT ESCAPE WHAT YOU’VE DONE.
it wasn’t me
THE WORLD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN WHAT HAPPENED.
it wasn’t me it wasn’t me it wasn’t my fault
THE WORLD HAS NOT FORGOTTEN YOU,
no no no no no
SHIP OF DEATH

This piece is something I’ve had rattling around in my brain for ages now - I think I’ve actually been thinking of it since before I finalized Astoria’s design, back when I could only picture her in a silver velveteen tracksuit for some reason. Now, though, I finally got around to drawing it, and I’m quite proud of how it turned out! It’s a bit edgy, perhaps, but that’s fine - I can have a little edginess, as a treat.

Here are the general notes:
-The dark vignette around the edges is meant to make the drawing seem smaller, si ilar to that that the-walls-are-closing-in feeling some people get during panic attacks or the like. Astoria is obviously not doing too hot here, so a dark, intense border felt like the right choice to highlight the emotion of the piece.
-Most of Astoria’s room isn’t visible here, obviously, but she has it decorated in a (slightly better version of) Scandinavian style, with plain white walls and minimal frills. The bold, black-and-white striped rug adds more character than many real-life examples of such decor; the use of rectangles as well as the black-and-white theme is also inspired by Astoria’s real-life interiors, which feature much of the same as well as a lot of red, which I considered adding in the form of a red rug at first before scrapping it in favor of all black and white.
-Astoria seems to have just gotten out of the shower here, hence her wet hair and bathrobe. I imagined her being dressed that way in this piece from the very start!

-The blood on the mirror is simply the result of Astoria being cut by the glass when she broke it, but it’s also meant to resemble bloody tears on Stockholm’s face.
-The background behind Stockholm is meant to resemble fog.
-Astoria is casting a shadow on the mirror’s surface, it’s just faint. But it’s there, I promise!

A key part of this piece is that you guys finally get to see what Stockholm might have looked like had she never become Astoria!
Here are the notes for her design specifically:
-Her dress is based on a specific 1950s dress which was apparently also called Stockholm! You can see it in this article here !
-She has three flowers on her dress, each of which represents the little spot things on her funnel.
-I gave her a sleek, simple hairdo rather than something overly fancy; that way, you can still see the details despite the distortion. Also, it just felt right.
-She has thinner lips and a wider nose than Astoria, and her cheeks are both rounder and less pronounced; this is meant to further Astoria’s whole plastic surgery look. As Stockholm, she would have looked vastly different, but as Astoria she’s experienced so many modifications that she’s practically unrecognizable.
-Her skin is slightly paler; I sampled Astoria’s skin color and literally just lightened it a bit.
-Her overall color scheme comes from this model of her!

Although this piece would suggest otherwise, Astoria’s long career makes her so much more than just the ship that hit Andrea Doria - that was only one facet of her story. For more information about her, check out these links:
