Description
Remember Ice Warning! , the piece I made to commemorate the discovery of SS Mesaba’s wreck? Well, I finally drew Mesaba again, and she’s gotten a long-overdue glowup! Here she is, brand new and ready to face the world! Here are the notes!
-She finally has the pink hair she deserves! When I first designed her, I hadn’t decided on only pink hair for ships built for the Leyland Line, so she had red hair before. Later, I changed my mind on that, so now Leyland Liners have pink hair. But wait - Mesaba was actually built for the Wilson & Furness-Leyland Line (basically a cooperative effort between three different companies, Leyland included), so what does that mean for her hair color? …Not much. Her hair would have been pink either way, since my idea for that particular fleet is that their ships have the hair colors of any of the companies making it up. So, with that in mind, Mesaba’s hair could have been red (Wilson, Furness), pink (Leyland), or blue (Furness). I ended up going with pink, obviously, because that was what I had in mind and because it went well with her color scheme, but now you guys have to live with the knowledge that Mesaba could have had bright blue hair.
-Her outfit is based on the famous photo of newsboy Ned Parfett holding a newspaper about the Titanic disaster. Since Mesaba, too, is famous for the transmission of Titanic-related news (although of course in her case it was before the disaster and sent to Titanic herself), it seemed fitting, plus an outfit like that is fitting for a ship that focused more on cargo than passengers.
-Her shoes are similar to the ones she had in her old design, but with the laces positioned differently. I really liked the white shoes with red laces, so I wanted to keep them for her new look.
-Her eyes are outlined in pink - another Leyland Line trait.
-Her mail bag has a bit of a different design and no longer has her name and number printed on it. It does, however, have an “if lost return to SS Mesaba” patch inside.
-The star pins on her hat are a reference to the Atlantic Transport Line flag!
-Her eyes are the same color as they were before.
-The title for this one comes from Warning Call by CHVRCHES!
