Ok so I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous, but hear me out. When Squirrelflight/Leafpool's secret is revealed, she loses everything. The trust of all her friends, the love of her life, the trust of her parents, and the love of the children that she raised as her own (and where honestly more hers than Leafpool's tbh why does Leaf get all the credit?). Instead of she and Leafpool dealing with it, Squirrelflight gets very, very upset and angry. Did she really mean so little to her clan, her friends, and her family? Well fuck them too, she thought. Fuck all of them. And thus began Squirrelflight's descent.

She grows bitter and resentful, even feeling hatred for the cats she used to love. During this time, the Dark Forest recruits her. A she-cat named Mapleshade offering training to make her better and stronger than the cats who had rejected her? Squirrel was on board. She barely even reacted when she found out it was the Dark Forest; after all, they had never betrayed her and left her to rot. No, that was all her clanmates. In this AU though, the Dark Forest is actually smart and gets four cats from each clan to work their way up to leader position. Squirrelflight is quickly highlighted as a candidate. To become the chosen one, she had to kill the other ThunderClan candidate: Ivypool. Squirrelflight does it immediately, without question, without regret. Ivypool does survive, but barely, and she's rendered permanently mute, so she can't tell anyone what she Squirrelflight did.

The Dark Forest, having seen Squirrelflight's ruthlessness and loyalty, make her ThunderClan's chosen one. Tigerstar finds this especially great as a final "fuck you" to Firestar; have his own daughter turn on him and betray him, just like Firestar made Tigerstar's son do to him. Leafpool still has no idea the extent of what her sister has done, but she's seen the changes in Squirrelflight and it scares her. In the first two books of OotS Squirrelflight works hard to regain everyone's trust, using a variety of manipulation techniques taught to her by the Dark Forest. Once she knows she's in the best position, she kills Brambleclaw, blaming it on a fox attack. ThunderClan believes her and she is made deputy. She is the first of the Dark Forest chosen ones to accomplish this (the others are Minnowtail (RiverClan), Redwillow (ShadowClan) and Breezepelt). Squirrelflight had no remorse or sadness for what she had done. Brambleclaw deserved it; she gave him the world and he spat in her face, all because she tried to help her sister. But, she went through the motions of grieving anyways. By now, Leafpool isn't just scared of the changes in her sister, but her sister herself.

Squirrelflight serves as a good deputy throughout the next book. Then, she kills her own father. What had he ever done for her anyways? Nothing. She again goes through the motions of grieving for a loved one. She recieved nine lives and came back as Squirrelstar with Blossomfall as deputy. Leafpool is actually legitimately terrified of her sister now, and she has this feeling Ivypool knows something the rest of the clan doesn't, based on the way Ivypool's fur spikes up and she flinches away from Squirrelstar every time she's near her. Jayfeather and Dovewing were also beginning to put two and two together. Jayfeather looks through Ivypool's memories and is horrified by what he sees. He immediately goes to tell the other three (in this AU, Hollyleaf is the third cat and Dovewing is the fourth. Nothing else changes though; Holly still runs away. Hollyleaf's power is persuasion; she can convince cats to do what she wants them to do, especially if they don't know she's doing it and/or are weak-willed). Leafpool eventually asks Jayfeather, who tells her what her sister has done. This sparks the three and Leafpool to actually get along because holy shit their leader is a Dark Forest cat planning on taking over the forest with her buddies.

Meanwhile, Squirrelstar is furious. Leafpool, the one cat she thought would never leave her side, had betrayed her, just like all the others. She starts getting more and more violent and harsh, introducing new, dangerous policies and ruling with an iron claw. ThunderClan is terrified of her and defying her rule. They k n o w she could kill them all in a fight if she had to. The other clans are also getting scared, so the four + Ivypool reach out to the other three clans and basically start a secret warforce to kill Squirrelstar, and that becomes the final battle. Squirrelstar, with ThunderClan and the Dark Forest backing her, against the other clans + the four + Ivypool and Leafpool. Squirrelflight becomes the overarching villain OotS needed.
