Description Finally, they came to a proper cross-walk and made their way across the busy street with traffic halted for them. They neared the river, now, and came to the big Mossking Bridge.
“Let's stop here for a bit,” Clara panted when the neared it's center. The thing the stood on was a great tourist attracted, so couple all around them were having their portraits taken and poems dictated even as three lanes of traffic went on all around them.
Sophie motioned to a bench and said, "If we're resting why not rest properly." She sat on the bench and patted the empty seat next to her for Clara to sit on. Sunny had gone through this many times before and sat in the grass, patiently waiting for the day to be done. If this was like any other day he'd just stand there and look pretty all day, not talk or listen, just follow like a mindless dog.
Baby stood next to him, weary of the water below them. He looked out anyway, sucking his fingers at the water birds.
Clara sighed. A mime did a cartwheel past them and she watched him wheel away.
An old woman approached them then. She stood near them like she wished to sit, but didn't even though there was room left on the bench. The old woman, wearing a brown shawl, just stood there like she was trying to decide wether to make light conversation or not.
Sunny drew his knees up to his chest and watched Baby run about, he wanted to join, but knew he'd get scolded for doing so.
Sophie wanted to yell at the old woman and tell her to sit down or go away. But she kept her tongue she turned to Clara and started making light conversation, "I'm glad we planned this outing today, it's such nice weather isn't it?"
“Ye-”
“What are those creatures?” asked the old woman who took out a satchel from around her shoulders and began to dig around in it.
Clara turned her head to the woman sharply. She didn't know wether to oblige her or not.
Sophia replied calmly, "They are Bio Flouras madam." She kept her hands folded in her lap, but her voice had an edge to it.
“Ah..” said the old woman like she knew what those words meant. “Fancy a game 'o cards to tell you your futures?”
Clara's mouth gapped and she looked at Sophie again, eager for her advice on how to handle this situation.
“Yes!” Baby came up to the lady. “I like games!”
The woman, heavy with old, bent bones, looked up at him. “Whole Penny, half-pence, half-a-dollar pie?”
He blinked at her. “... sing-a-song-a riddance to catch the reader's eye?”
“Good show,” said the old woman and she produced a deck of cards. Baby grinned broadly at having remembered the obscure nursery rhyme and didn't realize he'd agreed to pay the woman for her skills.
Sunny shifted, worried that Baby was being so unguarded. He stood and walked closer, seeing the deck as a normal deck of cards...yet..."What do those pictures mean?" He asked innocently.
“Ah,” said the old woman, like she was a character from a dream. “Let old Wendy Wormwood find out for you, my dears.”
She shuffled the cards handful over handful until they were all mixed up and then held the deck out to the Bio Flouras.
With no further instructions, Baby looked at Sunny and then withdrew half the deck from the woman. The cards in his hand smelt old and smokey.
“Let me see those, then,” said Wendy. After receiving those, she took out five and held them in her old boney hands.
Sunny stared in awe, "Can I go next?" It looked very interesting.
"Sunny!" Snapped Sophie.
Oh. He was in trouble. He looked gave Sophie a guilty look like a cild who'd had one too many cookies before dinner.
“You are part of this reading, creature. See here.” She indicated the middle-most card.
“You, child, are undergoing a great undertaking. Only good may come of it in the end. But it will take both of you and will be many years of work. And you will never see the full realization of your labors.” She shook her head like it was a pity.
“You have good hearts.” She thought for a moment, studying the cards hard. “Never let anyone ever tell you other-wise.”
Baby gazed at the cards in awe.
Sunny blinked and said thoughtfully, "But if it takes many years of work for us how come we don't get to see the result? Who will?? What is it???" He wanted to ask, 'Do we get to go home' bu he could feel Sophie's glare on him even from asking those simple questions.
The old woman shook her head like his questions were no good and stuffed her cards roughly back into the deck.
She went over to the empty space on the bench and produced a nice-sized towel and flopped it out out next to the girls. She started roughly shuffling her cards and then drawing them out in a pattern. Baby came over to watch what she was doing, still as awe-struck as ever.
“You have already begun to set something in motion, children. But a warning. Watch out for what you already have. You do not know you have it, though, you,” she indicated Baby,” have already given it to him,” she aired her suspicions. “You are in for a bumpy ride. You already have everything it takes. But there is a woman who will help you realize what it is you've got.”
She moved down to the lower half of the spread of cards. “There is strength and honor in you. Although you are still young. And you will succeed.” she looked deeply at the last few cards.
“But there is a dark man who will not want you knowing about the things you've got and the power you hold over him. But the higher-order of things will be on YOUR side. Not his. And, ah, did I mention?” she looked up and smiled at them. “You will succeed.”
Sunny inched closer to Baby and held his hand, "But...WHAT will we do? What did he give me??" He looked worried. He didn't like that she was answering the wrong questions. He wanted to know what she was talking about.
She bent back over her cards and touched her chin thoughtfully. “See this one?” she touched a picture of a plump, warm-looking woman. “What ever it is, you have already been working on it for quite a while. Are experts at it.” She sniffed. “Odd how you have been so diligent and yet do not know.” There was a twinkle in her eye and she looked the creatures up and down with a knowing smile.
Clara tilted her head to to side, hard. “You are mistaken, old woman. These two only just met today.” The woman seemed to not hear her and turned back to her cards.
Sunny looked at Baby and said quickly, "That's right. Right Baby?"
Sophie scoffed,  "Of course it's right." She made shooing motions toward the old woman, "Enough of this rubbish, we aren't paying you. Be gone."
The old woman looked like she'd been assaulted.
“No! I'll pay you!” said Baby. “What ever it is i've been working on that I don't know about, I think?” He looked at the sky, feeling confused. “When I find out what it is, i'll share it with you. Promise.”
The old woman sighed.
“Wendy Wormwood!” Baby showed her he would remember her name. She swatted her hand at him and hobbled off, used to this sort of treatment.
Sunny turned to Baby, "What do you think we were working on?"
"Sunny!" She gave him a death glare and commanded, "Come." Sunny gave Baby one last look before returning to his mistress' side, a look of dejection on his face.
Baby thought for a moment. Before turning bright green in his cheeks and his eyes going wide. His stem twitched and he ducked his little head for fear of someone reading his expression.
“Come on, everyone.” Clara stood up, feeling much better. “Lets go before she gets a guard to make us pay up!”
Sophie nodded in agreement then started sauntering off in the direction of the Ferry. Sunny followed her unhappily, not even trying to be covert about looking at Baby.
The last of their party followed stiffly behind his friends, no longer craning his neck to see everything.
