Inside, Seren knew they should be happy, they were finally growing up, but while Alma had a proud, excited smile on, they could only slump and wrap their arms around their stomach and stare at the floor.

“G-growing up?” Seren started shakily, shoulder’s hunched and eyes unfocused as they looked at Alma in the dim-lit room after she explained what could be going on with the quill.

“Ooh yes, aren’t you excited my dear?”

“No!” Seren cried out, hands flying up to their goggles, knuckles turning white as they gripped onto the blue straps, their chest heaved.

Alma looked at them with eyes wide in surprise and alarm. She placed a hand on Seren’s shoulder only to have the little quill jerk away from her.

“Growing up means I have to move away, they’re gonna force me into the cranny, and- and I won’t know anyone there and everything’s gonna change!” their voice only seemed to become more distressed with every syllable going higher and higher. “They won’t let me have my beebs there and my friends won’t be there, and there’s a lot of things that I’ll need to do that I don’t know how to, and no one’s going to tell me how to do them and i-it’s not fair!”

Seren’s whole form was trembling as tears threatened to spill down their cheeks. Alma had an expression of soft concern for the wyngling in front of her. She let out a heavy sigh and went on the floor to kneel in front of Seren, gently taking the wyngling’s claws off their goggles and into her own paws.

“You’re right, it’s not fair that anyone who is physically grown up is forced to learn these things on their own, it isn’t fair that countless others like you are ripped from a home familiar to them all because of changes that those Last Notch snobs find necessary.” the hatchery mom nearly hissed, a cold sort of rage burning in her core as her thoughts went to the countless adults who had come to her in tears after learning of the recent changes.

Seren hiccuped and stared at Alma waiting for her to continue.

Alma in turn sighed and looked directly into Seren’s violet eyes, “But you know Seren, from the moment I saw you hatch I always knew you were strong, and all this time with you has proved that. You smile and encourage others to do the best they can, you don’t let into bullies and are always trying new things,” she shifted and gently cupped Seren’s cheek, “If anyone can make it through this, it’s you. And just because you won’t be living under the same roof as I am, it does not mean that I won’t be here to help you at all, the nook will always be open for you. Whether you need advice or want to visit your friends or whatever you need dear”

Seren leaned into the warmth of Alma’s hand, tears flowing freely down their cheeks and onto the ground. “I… I guess, I’m just really scared.”

Alma smiled and stood up, fully squishing Seren’s face a little with both hands. “And it takes a lot of courage and maturity to admit that,” she pressed her snout to the quill’s forehead, “but I’ll be right here to help you with whatever you need.”

Seren couldn’t help but beam at her and wipe their eyes dry as Alma pulled back and grabbed the candle light before opening the door,

“now will you be alright to go back to bed then?”

Seren nodded and made to follow her. “Could you stay until I fall asleep?” they shyly whispered.

“Of course Dear.”
