Description
Alma sighed and leaned onto the counter, relaxing for a moment as most wynglings ran off to play outside or to hang out with some of the volunteer wyngrew who came to help out for the day. She was grateful for any help she got, watching over all the wynglings in the nook was definitely exhausting and a job that didn’t offer much breaks for herself; still she wouldn’t trade it for anything.
She pushed herself off the counter and walked down the hallway and into the wyngling playroom, deciding to tidy the area up a little while the kids were occupied. She worked on putting various toys away into bins and straightening up the others. She leaned down and picked up a blue scarf lying on the floor.
“Would you care for some help Ms.Alma?”
The nook mom jumped at the sudden voice and raised a hand to her chest and she turned to the corner before breathing out softly.
“Oh Cypress, it’s just you.” She smiled at the blue wyngling who sat perched on a bean bag with a book in hand.
He returned the smile as she walked closer to him.
“What are you doing here?”
“Oh, after Ms.Alice’s lesson I came in here to finish this novel. I would be more than happy to set it off to the side for now if you need help.”
“No it’s fine, I’m alright for now dear.” Alma turned to look outside, her eyes softened as she watched two wynglings chasing each other on the field. “It’s a beautiful day outside, why don’t you go out and play with your friends?”
Cypress’s eyes turned to the pages, his shoulders subtly drawing in, “Oh, um, no thank you, I’m okay in here.”
Alma frowned, the wyngling had been here for a little two months now since they had found him injured on the outskirts of Wynsiph. And while the first week and a half was more dedicated to him recovering, Alma had hoped that he had settled in and had at least made a friend or two.
“Okay well.” Alma turned away and fixed the scarf on her arm before an idea struck her. “The cookie jar is running low, how about you come along and help me make some more, I’ll even let you keep some for yourself so you have something to snack on later, or you can hand them out to whoever you want. How does that sound?”
“But, Ms.Alma, I don’t know how to make cookies.”
“That’s why I’ll teach you, and even if you just watch, the company is nice.”
“Oh, Alright then, yes I would be happy to help make more to refill the cookie jar.”
Alma felt her heart swell with joy and relief and Cypress beamed up at her before he slipped a bookmark into the last page he read and put the book back into the shelf.
“Perfect, let me finish tidying up here and we can get started.” Cypress nodded and without prompting, helped finish straightening up whatever mess was left.
Alma smiled at the boy, maybe he wasn’t fully settled in quite yet, but she knew with a little more time he’d fit in with the others, and perhaps find a group of friends for himself. Either ways, he’d be okay.
