===================================
The still air of the mansion had always been unsettling; the large space of the living room remained mostly unoccupied save for minor decorations like vases or paintings. It was unsettling to see the empty area. That was until a small grey form darted under one of the sofas, followed by light giggles.
Nearby a yellow figure ducked into one of the many decorative cabinets, shaking a couple of vases to quiver before rocking back into stability. Mira clapped a claw up to her mouth in a vain attempt to stifle her own giggles. She held her breath as a shadow passed by her hiding spot.
“My Chii, now where could those two have run off to?” A low, melodious voice asked. “Could they be in… here!” she exclaimed as she snapped open the cabinet next to where Mira was hiding.
While Mira held still, her brother Myn had fallen into a short fit of giggles.
“How odd. I didn’t know couches could laugh.” The same melodious voice said in a conspiratorial tone. “Unless…” she trailed off. Mira leaned against the door to listen in on what was inevitably going to happen to Myn.
Silence filled the room for a couple of seconds, perhaps it was a minute before Mira heard her brother squeal.
“A-ha! I caught you!”
“Haha- Mom- no- please haha stop!” Myn begged amidst his laughter as his mother tickled him relentlessly, “Mira help!”
Mira’s ears perked up as she ran out of her hiding spot, “Don’t worry Myn! I’ll save you!” she claimed as she charged towards her mother before tackling the silvery adult into the ground and attempting to tickle her.
The trio’s laughter echoed through the room as they each tried to gain advantage and tickle each other. Mira and Myn shared a look with each other, both grinning wildly before giving each other a nod. Less than a second later the two siblings teamed up to tackle their mother and gleefully flopping on top of her chest.
“Oof- Argh I’ve been defeated by my very children, oh the pain~!” their mother feigned, putting a hand to her forehead and leaning her head back dramatically.
“Mom, you’re being dramatic again” Mira pouted jokingly, sticking her tongue out, poking her mom’s cheek while Myn simply let out a few more giggles.
Evelyn let out a chuckle and ruffled her daughter’s hair. “Really? I think my theatrics are justified this time”
Before Mira could retort, Myn’s stomach growled, and the grey wyngling blushed.
“My, my sounds like someone’s ready for lunch then.”
“I want lunch!”
“Eh-heh yeah, sorry” Myn rubbed the back of his head with a sheepish smile as he and his sister got off Evelyn. The three got up to head into the kitchen and settled down while one of their maids prepared a simple meal of sandwiches for them.
As kids do, Mira and Myn were lightly messing with each other as they waited, occasionally poking or lightly shoving the other and whistling their innocence. At some point Mira was caught by Myn mid poke. Myn and Evelyn laughed at Mira’s pout but she too joined in the laughter.
A fourth husky chuckle made the trio stop and turn towards the doorway.
“Dad!” Myn and Mira exclaimed as they hopped out of their chair and rushed towards the dusty yellow wyngro. Mira jumped up into her father’s arms and nuzzled her face into him.
“Amund! You’re home quite early today.” Evelyn said in delighted surprise as she got up to join them.
“Yeah, well there hasn’t been much to do so I decided to leave early for the day to spend some time with my family.” Amund said with a smile before wrapping a free arm around Evelyn’s waist and pressing his snout against her.
“Ew, Mooom, Daaad you guys are being gross” Myn dragged a claw down his face at his parent’s display of affection, which earned a laugh out of the two adults. Amund set Mira down and scooped Myn into his arms.
“Oh are we? And what are you going to do about it” Amund asked, pressing a single claw up to Myn’s nose causing the wynling to squirm.
Evelyn chuckled at the two. “Alright alright, enough, come on let’s go eat lunch and maybe we can go out to town for the day.” she said which earned a cheer from the two wynglings as they rushed back to the table.
===================================
Myn watched as Amund pressed his snout onto his wife’s forehead, his eyes more tired than what Myn was used to. His parents exchanged hurried whispers to each other before Amund stood out of his chair beside the bed and headed out the dimly lit room. Myn followed his father down the stairs to bid him farewell for the day.
Amund gave him a weary smile and ruffled the grey wyngling’s hair before doing something similar to his sister who had suddenly appeared by his side.
“You’ll… you won’t be gone long, right?” Mira asked quietly. Amund leaned down and gave her a hug.
“Don’t worry I will be back home as soon as I can.” he reassured before addressing both of the siblings, “You two, take care of your mother for me while I’m gone okay?” Mira and Myn merely nodded and watched as the dusty gro disappeared behind the main doors.
The siblings walked up the stairs in silence. The silence of the mansion was suffocating as if death itself hung in the air.
Myn and Mira quietly walked into the room that held their mother and gently hopped up onto the bed.
“H-hey mom.” Mira’s voice was wobbly, and Myn couldn’t help but frown, his sister was always the dictionary definition of confidence, to hear the amount of anxiety that laced her voice made Myn feel as if the very floor beneath him would give out. He stared at his sister, her slumped form and shakiness only further magnifying his own nervousness.
Evelyn slowly turned her head towards the yellow wyngling, “Hey sweetheart.” she said, her once melodious voice grown raspy and weak.
“Is there, uh, anything we can get for you?” Mira asked, seemingly getting a grip on her nerves, if only for a second as she squared her shoulder and placed a barely visible smile on her face.
Evelyn shook her head. “No, I’m fine for now sweetie.” Mira shifted a little, not knowing what else to say, and quite frankly, Myn couldn’t blame her.
“Why don’t you two go play, you don’t have to be with little ol’ me.” Evelyn offered with a weak chuckle. Myn and Mira shook their heads and waited for a second before laying down and cuddling up to her.
“We’d rather stay here with you.” Myn said after a few moments, his normally soft voice piercing through the silence.
“Thank you, you two.” Evelyn said in a whisper as she leaned back onto the pillows before she started to hum what was a familiar tune for the two Oriah siblings.
“I know your eyes in the morning sun” Mira started as she leaned further onto her mother for both their comforts.
“I feel your love in the moonlit night” Myn continued before the three settled on humming along. What seemed like forever lasted for a mere five minutes as Evelyn drifted off to some much needed rest.
In the dark Myn stared at the ceiling, lost in thought; although snapping out of it as something floated into his vision. He instinctively snapped his head towards Mira and yup, he was right. Mira’s gaze was distant, her glands were glowing a bright orange and clouds were forming above her.
Myn frowned once more, he’s seen her do this before, but rarely, maybe once every other month; although he’d notice that ever since their mother had fallen ill a couple weeks ago, it had been happening more and more often. And if it happened twice in one week, it was one fit too many.
“Hey Mira?” he whispered sharply, hoping it would catch her attention.
Mira snapped back, blinking as the cloud formations stopped and her glands stopped glowing. She looked over to Myn and offered a grimace smile, “Yeah?” she asked.
“I’m scared.” Myn said softly, gaze drifting back to the ceiling.
Mira followed a similar motion, she exhaled and blinked, ignoring the stinging tears that threatened to spill from the corner of her eyes.
A beat of silence washed over the room before Mira finally answered.
“I am too.”
===================================
Myn’s eyes rapidly blinked as he woke up. Sitting up and stretching, he took a moment to observe the room around him only to get a cloud puff to the face, vapors getting caught into his lungs causing him to lightly cough.
His mouth turned down into a frown; drifting his gaze over to the bed adjacent to his only to jump in alarm. Mira was staring up at the ceiling, expression blank and eyes glazed over with tears. Her normally bright and clear eyes now red and puffy; dried tears clung to her cheeks leaving unpleasant tracks against her fur.
Myn was immediately by her side, shaking her out of her stupor.
“Mira! Hey, what’s wrong!?” his voice was frantic as he grabbed his sister’s shoulders and lightly shook her.
Mira blinked and gulped, fresh tears leaking out of the corner of her eyes as she choked down a sob.
“Mira?” Myn became more concerned at the lack of response, but was a little relieved as Mira’s magic glands stopped glowing and clouds had stopped forming. “What happened?” he asked quietly.
A beat of silence.
Then Mira slumped over and wrapped Myn into a tight hug.
“She… she’s dead…” her voice was frail, and broken from dehydration.
“W-who?” Myn had an idea but he needed to hear it.
Silence fell over the two once more.
Mira let out another sob, her grip tightening around Myn.
“Mom… Mom’s dead.”
Myn froze before his own eyes filled with tears, and a lump had formed in his throat.
Silence.
Then Myn wailed, clutching onto his sister for dear life.
===================================
Mira kneeled in front of the shrine. Despite it having been well over three months now, her mother’s death seemed like it was merely the day before. Amund had become closed, often distracting himself with work, and Myn; he had barely come out of his room, only coming out when one of the maids had called him to eat, or to do his lessons with his sister.
Mira lit a candle and settled it right next to her mother’s portrait just behind the purified skull. She looked at the painted grey eyes of the portrait, eyes stinging yet too dry to cry more than she already has.
“Things haven’t been easy since you left mom. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that you’re not-” Mira sighed sitting down and wiping her eyes before looking back at the portrait. “I wish you were still here, or that I had a way to talk to you, I don’t know what to do mom, Dad’s always gone and Myn won’t do anything unless he’s forced to do it.”
Mira paused, “I’m really trying to make the best of it, but it’s hard; Don’t worry though, I know Dad’s just grieving and he’ll come around again, e-eventually, but. Myn., I’m really worried about him…”
Silence filled the air, only filled by a faint hum of the chummies around the house.
Mira wanted to say so much more, yet at the same time, it was like a broken record for her, always looping the same thing over and over, she’s worried, she’s done her best to keep life moving, but her father only delved deeper into his work while Myn practically shut down refusing to speak about or do anything.
Merely a week ago they had gotten into a heated argument over it. Mira argued their mom would want them to move on, and Myn was upset at how easily she could say that as if her death wasn’t a big deal. It was short, and one of the few arguments the Oriah Siblings ever got into, and despite it happening a week ago, Myn’s final words to her before pushing her out of his room were still freshly seared into her brain.
“Then I guess you never loved her as much as I did!”
She let out a soft exhale, realizing the room had filled with clouds. Giving the lifeless painting a weak smile. “I’m gonna keep trying, You raised me not to give up afterall. Especially on Family”
Mira stood and went up the stairs with Myn’s room as her destination in mind.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mira knocked on the door and waited for a response. When no answer came she knocked once again.
“Myn? Can… Can I come in?”
No response.
Knocking once more, Mira took a deep breath and leaned against the door, “I’m coming in, we need to talk, please.” she whispered before twisting the knob and stepping into.
An empty room?
“Myn?” she called out looking around for any sign of her brother, only pausing to realize the window was open and a rope was tied to the corner of Myn’s bed.
It was quite fairytale-esk, but Mira quickly came to the conclusion that the rope was there for one sole purpose. Swift as lightning she rushed downstairs to find any staff available and screeched to a halt in front of one of the maids.
“Myn’s gone.” she breathed out.
