what a nice picture! I like the layout, and the hands make me sigh happily.
Points on making them male-size, well-defined, and having the middle and ring fingers close to the same size. They're so big compared to his shoulders though (don't know if that's normal (never met many young men) *goes and looks in mirror). Also, his left hand's middle finger seems somewhat wide at the base and oddly-shaped.
But it sounds like this was just a sketch, so I won't so anything too harsh : O sorry.

As far as the proportions in the hands go, I was closely referencing a photograph - but it was a female model, so there might be a few screw-ups here and there. Especially in the shoulders - I had to make them up a bit, since the model's breasts were in front of them XD;;;
But all your crits are duly noted! Thanks again! \o/
As for technique, there ... isn't really much of one, to be honest XD;; I slap on a base colour and then work into it with different shades using a basic hard round brush at about 5px. The key is to use lots of small, fast strokes, I suppose? 8D;

Oh wow. Gosh, it wouldn't matter WHO this is (I always viewed Alfons as a bit of an imposter, unfortunately), the style is striking and the emotion honest - as if he's pushing all his grief back into his head, telling it to go away. He's a rocket scientist; scientists don't have time for emotional baggage.
I love the way you painted him, though I wish the black surrounding him were a bit softer. It's wonderful. Looks like oil paint.
But the thing I most admire is the obvious show of emotion. It's heartbreaking. THAT is true skill.

Hmmm...mostly it bugged me that Alfons seemed to be OK with a strange guy telling him supposed 'fairy tales' about a parallel universe...and then accepting that same guy as his own bro. Fishy. Maybe he did it because he was hurting, but who knows whether the real-world Ed (the one you get to see for about 2 minutes and then gets mushed my a Hindenburg) was Alfons' real brother? 
Maybe it's just because I knew that, even if each character did have a similar being to him/herself in our world, it didn't mean they'd have the same personality, cares or quirks. It's like asking for a chocolate frosting and getting maple glaze instead. Still good, but not quite the same and certainly not expected. Still, I feel horrible that he had to be killed...
I love the movie - couldn't have asked for a more pleasing ending - but I still have a lot of questions. I assume that's what the director wanted. He's so sneaky.

I'm a bit confused though - who are you saying accepted whom as their own brother?
I always kind of thought that Alfons just humoured Ed because he was fond of him and because they'd become friends, not because he saw him as a brother. (I'm not entirely sold on the theory that London!Ed was Alfons' brother, actually...)
Ed, on the other hand, I think was more attached to Alfons because of his similarity to his own brother, but didn't want to really get close to him because that would mean binding himself to the other world... so in a way, he was using Alfons - not as a replacement for Al, but just as somebody it was OK to tell these things to.
I always saw Alfons as his own character, not just a replacement or double of Al Elric... but, ach, I know a lot of people saw it differently XD;;

Ha...well, that's a little unfortunate (for me).
This is the part where it gets confusing. As there are thousands of people who have seen the series and likewise seen the movie, there are also thousands of interpretations of the characters and how they act and why - especially when you consider that it's all fiction and they're not going to/can't explain themselves to us anyway. 
Maybe my definition of 'friendship' and 'trust' is just screwed up - we are all a bit mad and have our own unique eccentricities when it comes down to it, so maybe it's not as strange as I'm convinced it is.
Sure, Alfons is his own character and very special indeed, but he certainly hasn't been with us for 50+ episodes, so he's a little difficult for me to get used to. So in the event that I never get used to him...let's hear it for the next series and less mysteries for those like me who possess simple minds!

i really like the idea with the blackness closing in. effects like that really add emotional value to a picture that might not have had as much, had it just been the person's figure (kudos!) XD (i woulda never thunk to do that)
