I started working on this about...3 months ago? >_<''' But finals and vacation and whatnot took up most of my time between then and now, so it took me extra long to finish it.Clarification: It's an as-yet unborn phoenix, beginning to wake underneath a city, which is beginning to burn. The butterfly symbolizes rebirth, etc. Note that the main portion of the body is between the cardinal directions of north and east, and more to the east, so it's almost the spring/phoenix season.
The original line work was done 100% by hand; I didn't even have a ruler or a compass to make things straight and neat (so that's why all of the circles are lop-sided
). Inking it was rather nerve-wrecking, because I don't ink stuff very often and doing long, curving lines especially scares me. (Btw, I put this in the traditional gallery because I figured the lines themselves were the important part, more so than the color.)I'm still not totally happy with the colors, but they're okay, so I'll keep them for now.
Edit: Sorry for the repost. At the suggestion of , and since it has been suggested that I submit this to the upcoming student show at my school, I went back and brightened up the colors a bit. I'm much happier with them now. ^_^

It was a good suggestion. ^^ I hadn't been happy with the colors before, and after trying them brighter, I found that that was the main problem. I figure that outside perspectives are the most honest ones, and so it's good to pay attention to what other people think. /babble
