Because I do all mine hand held I use a flash.
My lens doesn't have Image Stabilizing and using
a tripod for insects is not particularly appealing.
I use manual focus, I fix it then move the camera
toward the subject. The trick is to maximise the DOF
by getting - let's say - an eye in focus then moving
forward till it begins to blur then retreat slightly.
It is worth remembering that there are often things
in front of the eyeball that you may want in focus
and this may influence how far you retreat.
Because we are dealing with millimetres these
movements need to be very subtle indeed and it
helps to be lent against something or the camera
braced on a knee or branch.
