Another great shot

It was your original shots of wasps that really attracted me to your photography but are they becoming more rare?
I've not seen one in my garden all year. I know that they are not everybodies favourite but I think they are are almost the perfect example of how nature can turn out to be the best designer

They are cool and frankly they don't deserve their
bad reputation. I have been stung by a Wasp but it
was a very long time ago. Since I have been photographing
them it has become pretty obvious to me that you do
have to be pretty bloody stupid and unreasonable to
provoke a Wasp. Like Bees they will defend themselves
if sat on otherwise they are not a threat. Unless of
course you happen to be a Wasp from another colony
competing for food. In which case it is often a fight
to the death!

There are fewer about this year but there are even
fewer Honey Bees. There aren't that many Flies,
either come to think of it... compared with year.

I used to think that Wasps got up to some ghastly
tricks, parasitizing lots of other creatures. But
there are just as many Bees and Ants and other
insects that use these means to raise their young.
So across the spectrum of Wasps they are perfectly
normal for insects.

And they are very photogenic.

I couldn't agree more, I got stung lots of times as a child but looking back on it that was due to my insistence of swatting wasps whenever I saw them because like lots of people a saw them as pests (also little boys can be particularly cruel to anything smaller than themselves).

As an adult, I have been stung once and that was because a wasp got trapped, by me, under my arm. Hardly the wasps fault

However, since seeing images like yours, I see them as quite magnificent creatures but unfortunately I've not seen any in my garden all summer. I was hoping to get some shots of this sleek invertebrate but to no avail; it may well be a long wait

Have you tried putting out a honey or Golden Syrup?
You could try a glass of beer or cider they can
smell that from miles away.

If you use honey it is wise to dilute it with
water and boil it. Just in case you get some
bees visit, I'm told other bees honey can make
them ill. If you use golden Syrup you mustn't
give them too much as the sugar concentration
can make Bees unwell too.

I've left jam and other sweet substances but to no avail, I left out a lot of fruit this week but then it's rained ever since. I've not tried honey or Golden Syrup but maybe I will when the weather turns, thanks

Melon is quite a good attracter because its smell is extremely pervasive
as any one who left an unwrapped slice in the fridge will tell you.
Also bananas promote a lot of invertebrate activity.

I'm not sure that I could resist eating the melon myself and as for the banana, I did have one left but I was subjected to a torrent of abuse when I suggested leaving it out as bait

The idea of a glass of beer might be a good one to try; when I visit the 'Butterfly Farm' there is always a lot of butterflies feeding on the (not so fresh) fruit and the smell of alcohol is most pronounced.
It is really clear that they like a little tipple or three
