You were currently leaning against one of the fences in the walk-in bird exhibit. The zoo had recently opened it in order to attract more visitors by tempting them with a close-up with several of the exotic species. Somehow, they had managed to maintain the enclosure so that the birds could live together comfortably. There were macaws that kept mimicking people; making toddlers giggle with glee; rainbow lorikeets that calmly ate some fruit left out on a food dish, kingfishers that kept splashing people with water from their feathers and a few other species that you didn't know the name of. You didn't mind though. After all, they had your favourite bird settled within the enclosure as well. A young male bowerbird whom you had nicknamed Button, due to his love of the objects, was building a nest next to you out of white coloured objects. He was the only bowerbird in the zoo but he didn't seem to mind; fluttering up to you so that you could give him white feathers, pencils, marbles; anything you had in your pockets that was white really. Every time you gave him an object, he would pick it up in his pale beak and tweet at you before carefully weaving it into his nest. Button had the classic plumage of a bowerbird, a dark blue, but he kept switching the colour of his nest every week or so. You worried that he would eat some of the objects you gave him but so far, he had kept them strictly for decorating purposes and he would huff if you took them away.
You outstretched a palm holding a white bottle cap and Button began to move towards it. Suddenly, the young bird switched directions and darted across the enclosure. Confused and slightly concerned at his odd behaviour, you followed after the bird.

You edged your way past visitors and wandered past other birds until you found Button tweeting at a woman from his perch on a low-hanging branch.
"Button!" You called before freezing in your tracks as the girl turned around. She was a troll but her skin was a very pale grey that seemed to glow slightly. She had short hair that was styled perfectly, two mismatched horns; one slightly curved and the other ending in a sideways point; and she was holding herself elegantly. She wore black lipstick that looked so inviting, a grey tank top with the Virgo sign in a jade green that was worn over the top of what appeared to be a shoulder-less black shirt and a long red skirt with white buttons adorned on the side. Ah, buttons. White ones. Dammit bird.
You sighed and walked up to Button, holding out a finger which he hopped onto, still staring at the troll's skirt.
"Sorry Miss, Button," You gestured to the bird now perched on your finger, "likes buttons particularly white ones." You turn your (e/c) gaze over to the girl's.
"That's Quite Alright Miss... (y/n)" She spoke whilst smiling lightly; her curved lips plucking at your heart strings perfectly.
"H-how do you know my name?" You stutter, casting a glare at a nearby mockingbird which copied you. The troll frowned very slightly and pointed to your name badge.
"It States Your Name Right There." She spoke calmly.
"Ah." You advert your gaze, blushing slightly at your embarrassing error.
"If It Makes You Feel Like We Are On Equal Ground, My Name Is Kanaya Maryam." She chuckled at your blush.
"Nice to meet you Kanaya." You manage to respond without tripping over your words like a moron.
"Likewise (y/n)." Kanaya returned the pleasantry, smiling like an angel. Button stared up at you with an almost indignant look on his face and tweeted harshly; fluttering his wings in annoyance as he did so.
"No, you can't have the buttons." You whisper shouted at him, earning a wing slap to the face. Kanaya stepped forward and offered a white button to the bird. She must have had a spare somewhere. Button turned from harassing your face and tweeted joyously as he spotted the offering, which he accepted before happily hopping back to his nest; weaving the button amongst the food wrappers and the hair bobbles. You glare after him, rubbing a scratch from where his sharp claws had caught you. The troll grabbed your hand and gently rubbed a thumb across the graze; a concerned look passing over her face as yours turned a bright red.
"Are You Okay (y/n)?" She asked, moving a bit too close as she applied a plaster on top of the scratch. She must have hidden pockets in her skirt or something.
"Um, yeah. I'm fine." You respond, averting your gaze from Kanaya, your face keeping its red tinge.
"Are You Sure? You Seem A Bit Red." She spoke again, holding a hand up to your forehead as if checking for a fever.
"Yep, completely fine. Don't worry about it." You say, stepping back from the troll. Button landed on top of your head and tweeted again, tilting his head until he was staring into your eyes. Kanaya laughed at your bewildered expression as the bird suddenly appeared from thin air and held out her hand.
"Shall We Look For More Objects Together?" She asked, her eyes glinting with beauty. You reach forward and lightly take her hand; a particular bird nuzzling into your (h/c) (h/l) hair.
"Sure." You respond as the two of you begin to walk around the enclosure. Together.
