I'm 25 and i still live at home... but i totally get what you mean. I wish i was already living on my own, but cause i went to collage and graduated last year, it's not possible financially. So now i'm working hard to save some money.

Tee hee hee..I like your signature as well...it reminds me of a book I'm reading right now. "Kafka on the Shore" by Haruki Murakami- a cat said almost the same thing to one person.

Snowflake-ske In reply to Kaylanna [2006-11-16 09:36:57 +0000 UTC]

It's really an interesting phrase. Cause I do believe a lot of people strive to be someone they’re not and sometimes loose their self in the spectacle of it all, but on the other hand our name doesn’t really say a lot about us. We have been given it with birth, but it could have been just any other name.
It’s our actions and thoughts that say something about us, not our name. Although some may argue with that statement.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kaylanna In reply to Snowflake-ske [2006-11-17 15:22:56 +0000 UTC]

I agree with you~
Yes..I think that we are all gradually losing ourselves trough the different ways of our lives. It takes a lot of will, thinking, and dreaming to stay true to oneself. And yes..names don't mean anyhing...sometimes it's really strange when you hear someone calling your name..and you don't feel like that's you..and don't turn around~

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowflake-ske In reply to Kaylanna [2006-11-19 20:10:06 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure I totally agree, I don't think it's a question of dreaming. It's a question of what is most important to you; to belong to a group or to spend more time on your own. I don't believe you can really conform to a group and stay really true to yourself. You always have to adjust to the others till a certain extent. Which I don’t mean you aren’t real within a group, but I do believe that people sometimes need to be on there own and take time to reflect.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kaylanna In reply to Snowflake-ske [2006-11-19 22:31:08 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, what I meant, was that the dreams are a part of us, but many people tend to push them aside, forget about them trough time. And that's how you lose the colours of the world around you, everything becomes more less, gray. But that's another theme.
But yes, you do have to compromise between the groups and yourself....and then it all depends on how much you appreciate yourself and value your way of thinking. And I don't think the groups are bad either-you can learn new things, realize you have talents for something you never thought you did.

Snowflake-ske In reply to Kaylanna [2006-11-20 10:17:14 +0000 UTC]

There is a point to what you say and dreams are idd a great motivation to keep going when it gets harder.

Snowflake-ske In reply to Zacheriah [2006-11-16 22:14:11 +0000 UTC]

hehe, thank you for saying that! I hope you are right. Sometimes i feel like i'm taking one step forward and two steps back. I have been able to do some great experiences, but it can be very frustrating and demotivating as well. Especially if you still have many goals you want to accomplish... which i still have. I like to take my time for it and so far i had the opportunity that people just offer me commissions and other opportunities. I’m not good at selling myself and my work, so that’s a really good deal for me. hehe I sometimes feel like i'm not worthy yet or that i'm still too young and i believe that shows, which makes it more difficult to be taken seriously. I sometimes can get mad at myself for that.

Do you ever do exhibitions or commissions?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zacheriah In reply to Snowflake-ske [2006-11-17 10:01:36 +0000 UTC]

I do portrait commissions, mostly. I just started painting about 2 months ago, and I haven't really tried my hand at any painted commissions yet. I have not yet done any exhibitions, though that is a goal that I hope to accomplish within the coming year. I just have never had time to really work on art. I've just had to squeeze it around everything else. Now, I have some time, and it's my hope to use this time to really start building something in the art world. It's difficult though, because I really don't know what I'm doing. I'm not educated in art, and I'm living in a foreign country. I guess I have to figure out how to use those facts in a constructive manner rather than letting them drag me down. I'm trying to start out with pencil commissions - it's what I know, and it's usually fairly straightforward. I find that people who like pencil drawings usually appreciate detailed photo-like drawings as well ("I thought it was a photo!" is a huge compliment from people who appreciate this kind of work), so it's easy to please without NEEDING to be overly creative. I would also like to try my hand at illustration for children's books, as well as whimsical murals, etc. Time will tell how it will go.
I can identify completely with your feelings of being too young and therefore inferior. I have been criticized for that myself...on more than one occassion. I think it is difficult to sell one's self when people can sense that you don't think you're good enough to be bought. I would certainly like to see your work in a magazine. Art like yours makes an article memorable - at least for me. I always appreciate when I see art that can stand on it's own as art, yet very cleverly portrays the subject at hand. That kind of thing impresses me a lot.

Do you ever exhibit or hang work at galleries?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Snowflake-ske In reply to Zacheriah [2006-11-19 20:48:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's a good idea to start with something you are good at and know well. When you have won their confidence, you can experiment more after you built up your credibility.

whimsical murals?

I totally agree with that, people really sense that when you feel inferior. You see it in the hesitation when I name a price. You actually see me thinking, who is willing to pay that for a print. I need a manager. LOL

Thanks for the sweet compliment.

Yes I have exhibit and been featured in art magazines. I’ve done 6 exhibitions in a year time, 2 of them are still running. I have been very lucky like that.

I think I need to start to take myself more serious, before they will. Although some of them take me very seriously and believe in me as an artist, but it's a fact that I don't see myself as an 'artist'. I try to tell a point. Try to capture an atmosphere or a idea I have. I mostly work around social and psychological topics. It's what I want to offer. I don't mean to make a β€˜beautiful’ image.

Also there are so many artists and our community is overloaded with a profusion of images (good and bad ones), therefore I sometimes have moments when I realise that I have nothing original or different to offer? What I make can be as easily done by someone else.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Zacheriah In reply to Snowflake-ske [2006-11-19 21:05:48 +0000 UTC]

I certainly know that feeling - the one where you realize that there are a lot of artists, and yet people buy their wall decoration at IKEA. That feeling when you realize that you slave over an image that people might just glance past. That feeling that there will always be someone out there who can make a better image than me for cheaper. But hten, it's also important to realize that no one will ever make my images. If I don't make them, they will never come to be. Others might do similar things, but my images are as unique as my fingerprints. It's for that reason that I will keep making them, even if no one buys them. One think I like to do when I'm feeling down is just to walk into a local gallery. It usually doesn't take me long to cheer up after seeing how much really mundane and ugly art seems to sell, and how much the really interesting and beautiful art tends to sell for. It kind of refreshes my hope.

Congratulations on the many exhibitions. I'm still trying to figure out how and where I can have my first. My dream is to have a joint exhibition with my wife. We both have a lot to learn, but it's something to shoot for.

By the way, 'whimsical murals' simply means cute childish paintings painted on the wall of childrens' rooms. It's becoming popular to do that kind of thing in wealthier neighborhoods in the US according to my mom. I'd just like to give it a shot. It would be fun!

You have a point there as well. Hehe, funny to say. I'll keep that in mind and i will even try that one day.

Thank you, like I said before, I have been very fortunate like that. It would be idd nice to be able to share that together as a couple.

Good to know, i didn't know they had a specific term for that. If you have to possibility to do that, you really should grab it.

It is and it isn't. The composition is all photographic elements, but i work threw it with textures, sometimes close up from pictures or sometimes made manually, so it's a mixture.
